Kevin McGarry (born March 18, 1985)[citation needed] is a Canadian actor, director, and writer. He is best known for playing Nathan Grant on the Hallmark Channel series When Calls the Heart and Mitch Cutty on CBC's Heartland. McGarry has appeared in over 20 Hallmark television films, including the popular Wedding Veil series. He has also worked as a stage performer, screenwriter, and director.
Early life and education
[edit]McGarry was born on March 18, 1985, in Kincardine, Ontario, Canada.[2] He developed an interest in acting by chance during high school when he wandered into a 12th grade theatre class as a freshman.[3] He graduated from George Brown College in 2007 with a degree in creative writing, studied theatre at Fanshawe College, and later trained at Pro Actors Lab in Toronto.[4]
Career
[edit]McGarry performed at the Shaw Festival and Charlottetown Festival, appearing in stage productions such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, She Loves Me, Anne of Green Gables, and Enchanted April.[5] McGarry also performed in Rose Petty Panto (2009), Nebraska (2009), Funny Business (2010), Turn the Beat Around (2010), His Gal Friday (2010), Anne of Green Gables (2011), Come Back, Little Sheeba (2012), Peace In Our Time (2013), Enchanted April (2013), and She Loves Me (2014).[5]
He began appearing on television in the mid-2000s, with early guest roles in Lovebites (2007), Being Erica (2009), and MTV's Turn the Beat Around (2010). Other appearances include Murdoch Mysteries (2015), Private Eyes (2016), Man Seeking Woman (2017), Saving Hope (2017), The Bold Type (2018), Ransom (2018), Taken (2018), When Hope Calls (2019), Schitt's Creek (2020), and Netflix's The Night Agent (2023).
His breakout role came in 2015 as Dr. Timothy "Hud" Hudson in the teen medical series Open Heart.[3] From 2016 to 2021, McGarry portrayed Mitch Cutty in CBC's family drama Heartland.[3] In 2019, he joined the cast of Hallmark Channel's When Calls the Heart as Nathan Grant, a role that became a staple of the show's romantic storyline.[5]
McGarry had his feature film debut with a small role in Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010).[6]. He has gone on to star in many made-for-TV movies for networks such as Hallmark and Lifetime[5]. McGarry has also appeared in several short films, including A Rock and a Hard Place (2006), Cigarettes Hurt Babies (2009), Lucky (2012), Hugh & I (2014), the music video Away (2015), Happy F#@%ing New Year (2016), Falling Through the Cracks: Greg's Story (2018), and Dead Weight (2019).
He co-wrote the short film Hugh & I and directed Happy F#@%ing New Year.
Personal life
[edit]McGarry confirmed his relationship with When Calls the Heart co-star Kayla Wallace in 2020 via Instagram.[7] The couple announced their engagement in 2022 and confirmed their marriage in 2024.[1] They have appeared together in several Hallmark films and have done joint promotional interviews on the Hallmark Channel and the Suspenders Unbuttoned Podcast.[8]
