To help you out, I will advise that you need to find reliable sources that talk about this game in-depth. Using its official site or blogs will not cut it. It is about the quality of the sourcing, not the quantity. You can also ask for assistance at this project where you can find a list of sources that you can use to help show notability of the topic. Laser Dance is a mixed reality game developed in Unity. Players press buttons on opposite sides of an area by avoiding touching lasers that appear in their surroundings. Since Laser Dance involves moving around and pressing buttons, it is a room-scale game. The difficulty of the levels increases as the user progresses. Levels require a range of physical movements, including crawling and navigating through complex laser arrays.

Whenever the player "dies" (by touching a laser), a snapshot of the player's upper body becomes available, allowing for analysis of the mistakes made.

The game is being developed solely for the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S. Its developer, Thomas Van Bouwel, also created Cubism.

An early access release is planned for Fall 2025. The game is undergoing playtesting in limited user groups while additional features are in development.[1] [2]

Laser Types

[edit]

Laser Dance has four types of lasers. Red lasers stay still, yellow lasers move in a predetermined path, blue lasers disappear and reappear, and green lasers move as you move. [2]

Media Appearances

[edit]

A prototype was shown for the Global Game Jam 2022 and the official teaser trailer released on September 28, 2023.

Van Bouwel spoke with the CTO of Meta, Andrew "Boz" Bosworth in a podcast discussing topics related to virtual reality. Boz discussed his experiences with Cubism as well as his experience using Resolve, a software tool Van Bouwel helped develop.

IGN feature Laser Dance in a creature feature about its upcoming early access and its accessibility announcement. [3]

Road to VR published an article mentioning how Laser Dance is a more immersive version of the childhood game of floor is lava.[4] Android Central published an article highlighting Laser Dance’s implementation of upper-body tracking and accessibility customization options. [5]

How It Adapts

[edit]

In an effort to make Laser Dance unique for every player, tools were developed to make it adapt to every room and every player's needs. One of these tools is a pathfinding algorithm (developed by guest developer Mark Schramm) that finds paths between the two buttons. It also tries to keep the pathway the player follows away from objects to help reduce the likelihood of collisions with physical objects in the environment.

Another tool involves simulated rooms within Unity that allow for viewing what the levels look like in various room layouts. Players may also opt-in to submit their room layout to improve the experience. This approach helps identify and address compatibility issues across different room configurations.

The final tool is an accessibility feature that allows players to customize settings such as crouch height, player height, and shoulder width. This allows for accessibility accommodations across various body types and mobility levels.[9] [10]
