Luc MacKay

Luc MacKay (born 2002) is a New Zealand student leader, climate advocate, and governance professional. He is best known for serving as President and Chair of the University of Canterbury Students' Association (UCSA), representing over 25,000 students, and for his involvement in national and international policy advocacy, including participation in the New Zealand delegation to the COP29. He also served on the University of Canterbury Council during his tenure as President.

Early Life and Education

Luc was born in England and moved to New Zealand at the age of six. He holds dual citizenship in New Zealand and France. He attended the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, where he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Operations/Supply Chain Management, alongside a Certificate in Arts. He is fluent in French and conversational in German.

Student Leadership and UCSA Presidency

Luc was elected President of the University of Canterbury Students' Association for 2024 and re-elected for a second term in 2025. During his tenure, he led initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, and focused efforts on drawing relevancy to the UCSA."

Under his leadership, UCSA maintained its carbon-neutral status and expanded student support services. He also oversaw major events reaching over 20,000 attendees and played a key role in allocating a budget exceeding $20 million.

Governance Roles

In addition to his role at UCSA, Luc has served as a University of Canterbury Council member, participating in the governance of a budget of over $500 million. He has sat on several key committees, including Audit and Risk, Capital Works, Health and Safety, and Academic Appeals. He is also a trustee of the UC Trust Fund.

Luc also serves as the Treasurer for Youth4Nature, a Canadian not-for-profit.

National and International Advocacy

Luc had heavy involvement in founding the Aotearoa Tertiary Students’ Association, a national student-led body. Though in 2024 his executive made the decision not to join but were open to review later in 2025. In 2024, he represented New Zealand at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he advocated for youth participation in climate policy. His advocacy focuses on digital inclusion, ethical AI, renewable energy, and climate resilience.

Other Work

MacKay is a music producer, producing genres including ambient, drum and bass, and pop. He is also an experienced public speaker and has contributed opinion columns to student media.
