Mallamma

May refer to many women in Indian folk lore often of pure and good character among those are the fallowing.

A successful warrior queen.

Siraguppa: Basavabhushan Swamiji of Sriguru Basava Mahamat said that the values ​​of Shivasharane Hemaraddi Mallamma's life are an example for women.[1]

Mallamma in Telugu Folklore

In Telugu folklore, the name Mallamma is often used symbolically to represent the ideal of a devoted and virtuous woman. These stories, passed down through generations, highlight the cultural importance of fidelity and devotion in Telugu society. Note while it seems Mallamma refers to a model woman there is also a story of Mallamamba showing part of the Telugu version of the story of Shodasa Gauri Vrat Katha[2][3]

This story promotes strong morals by giving good verse of the karmic consequence for wrongs.

It appears Mallamma is generally the ideal pure virtuous woman. This story shows another side of an un-virtuous women and what happens. This story aims to show many lessons.

It starts with the two princesses both equally beauty being married.She then walks sadly in the forest seeking Gauri a variety of objects symbolizing different karmic energy are seen on her journey.

After she collapses on the search Gauri appears and guides morals by giving good verse of the karmic consequence for the various things she has seen,

  • భర్తరాకముందే భుజించి, పెద్దలను గౌరవించని స్త్రీ అలా పాషాణంగా మారింది. A woman who ate before her husband and disrespected elders turned into stone.
  • ధనధాన్యాపూర్ణి ఉన్నా దానధర్మాలు చేయనివాడు మామిడిచెట్టుగా మారాడు. A man who was wealthy but never gave charity became a mango tree.
  • ఎలాంటి వరుడిని తీసుకొచ్చినా వంకలు పెట్టి పెళ్లికంగీకరించని కన్య పుష్పించని మాధవీలతగా మారింది. A maiden who rejected every suitor with fault-finding turned into a madhavi creeper that never blooms.
  • తానే విద్యావంతుడిని, కీర్తిమంతుడుని అని గర్వంతో తన దగ్గరకు విద్యార్జనకు వచ్చినవారికి విద్య చెప్పక పంపిన పండితుడు ఒండ్రపెడుతున్న గాడిదగా తిరుగుతున్నాడు. A scholar who, out of pride, refused to teach students seeking knowledge became a donkey turning a grain grinder.
  • తన పిల్లకలు పాలివ్వని తల్లి పొదుగునిండా పాలున్నా, దూడకివ్వలేని స్థితిలో బర్రెగా తిరుగుతున్నది. A mother who denied milk to her own children became a buffalo, heavy with milk, but unable to feed her calf.
  • వ్యవసాయానికి పనికిరాని బంజరుభూమిని దానం చేసిన రాజు ఊసరక్షేవూతంలో ఎద్దుగా తిరుగుతున్నాడు. A king who donated barren, uncultivable land is now reborn as a bull plowing dry wasteland.[3]

A wife who would give respect to her husband became the stone.

A person who had not performed any worshipping or did not donate any alms even being capable of doing them has become a flowerless tree called KutujaVruksham

A Mother In Law, who had not given food and clothes to her daughter in laws even though she had loads of food grains and clothes had become the hot bowl in the forest.

A Brahmin who had not given water to anyone had become the pond at place where it was not useful anyone.

A lady who had not given flowers to God, other people, women even when the flowers were abundant had become the creeper without flowers.(Malathilatha)

A queen who had not observed a Vrat or Fasting had become a Buffalo without milk.

A girl who rejected the marriage alliance brought by her father, by stating some reason or the other had become a girl in the forest and was all alone.

A Brahmin even after reading the Vedas, was talking abusively, had never done a good work had become the log.

A king, who killed animals for fun became the hunter at an area where there was no water.

A king who was abusive had become the Donkey.

A Scholar, who had given wrong judgments by taking bribe became the Elephant.

A queen, even though having fertile lands had donated non fertile lands had become the cow at a place where there was no water.

A queen who had donated a village without proper facilities had become an abandoned village.

A person, who does not clean his house and who keeps on commenting on the people on the road had become the grass.

A person who had wealth and never gave a single penny as donation became the rice heap which no one touched.

A mother who had not given milk to her child, even though there was milk within her had become the milk bowl.[2]

In the end the women takes these lessons, puts them to practice, and shares them, being forgiven and lives a happy life.
