Matthew George Floyd (born professional boxer, UBO World Cruiserweight Champion, and youth mentor.[1]
24 March 1995), known as Matt Floyd or Matty "The Jedi" Floyd, is an AustralianHe is also known for his past involvement as a motorcycle gang president and a period of incarceration for vigilante activities during his 20s.
During his 20's, Floyd served time in prison in connection with controversial actions taken while leading a motorcycle club — actions he has stated in multiple interviews were aimed at confronting individuals he believed to be involved in child exploitation.
He gained international media attention in early 2025 after challenging British professional boxer, Tommy Fury, claiming a potential fight was actively being negotiated between the two sides.
Early life
[edit]Floyd was born on 22 March 1995 in Bedford Park, South Australia. He had a difficult childhood, spending extensive time in foster care. In interviews, Floyd has stated that around the age of 10, he was placed with a family involved in child abuse, an experience which caused him significant trauma. He ran away from that home and later lived on the streets, becoming involved with teenage gangs.[2]
Gang involvement and imprisonment
[edit]Floyd quickly rose to becoming a leader within a large Perth motorcycle club at a young age, setting up the West Coast chapter of the Lone Wolf motorcycle club, however this led to early criminal activity[3]. Attributing his motivations to his childhood experiences, Floyd and others associated with the club engaged in vigilantism, targeting suspected paedophiles[2][4]. In interviews, he described luring individuals they believed to be predators and confronting them, aiming to "scare them to death"[3].
This activity led to his eventual arrest. Floyd claims he was set up by police while confronting a registered sex offender, the targeted individual who was reportedly a police informant[3]. He was subsequently convicted of kidnapping and assault, receiving a sentence of five and a half years in prison and serving approximately three and a half years.[3]
Boxing career
[edit]Following his release from prison in 2018, Floyd officially commenced his professional boxing career on February 26, 2021 securing a win by unanimous decision against Ivan Kolar[5][6]. Fighting out of Perth, Western Australia, he competes primarily in the light-heavyweight division under the nickname of "The Jedi"[7].
According to Boxrec, his current professional record is 15 wins and 1 loss (15-1), with 10 wins by knockout, placing him at #127 in the world and #9 in Australia[5]. His sole loss came against Thai boxer Sirimongkhon Iamthuam in Thailand in October 2024, a result Floyd disputed and was ruled a No Contest by the World Boxing Foundation on 22 October 2024[8]. However, the original result of the fight remains recognised by the Professional Boxing Association of Thailand and Boxrec[9]. A rematch occurred in December 2024 at the Marriott Hotel in Ankara, Turkey, which Floyd won by unanimous decision[5][2]. Floyd has claimed titles including the West Australia State Light Heavyweight[5], WBC Asian Silver Light Heavyweight[10] and the ANBF Australasian Light Heavy[5] over the course of his career.[1]
Floyd described his boxing style as "awkward" and "different", attributing this to self-training in front a mirror in a prison cell for several hours a day.[3]
In January 2025, Floyd made international headlines by claiming that negotiations for a potential high-profile fight against British boxer and reality television personality Tommy Fury were underway, suggesting a potential fight date of March 29, as part of the Misfits 21 undercard at the AO Arena in Manchester. Neither Fury nor Misfits Boxing have officially confirmed the bout, with no further details officially announced as to the purported fight.[11][12][13]
Floyd is currently scheduled to fight Jack Gregory at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, Queensland on 8 June 2025.[5]
Personal life and philanthropy
[edit]Floyd owns and operates a boxing gym named "Pinky's Gym" in O'Connor, Western Australia[3]. The gym is known for its community involvement, helping troubled youth avoid crime and addiction through boxing, reportedly taking "hundreds of kids" off the streets[3].
In media interviews, Floyd has expressed charitable intentions, notably stating he would donate his entire purse from the potential Tommy Fury fight to homeless and men's mental health awareness efforts[2].
