Distribution and habitat

[edit]

Found primarily in the Western Pacific, particularly around Japan and surrounding waters.

It inhabits subtidal zones and soft-bottom environments, often at moderate depths.

Like other Modiolus species, it attaches to substrates using byssal threads.

Description

[edit]

Shell is elongate and moderately inflated, as typical of the Modiolus genus.

The shell color is often golden-brown, which is likely the source of the species name aurum (Latin for "gold").

The interior of the shell can be nacreous (pearly).

Ecological Role

[edit]

Filter feeder: helps maintain water quality by filtering plankton and suspended particles.

Plays a role in benthic ecosystems, forming mussel beds that provide habitat for various invertebrates and fish.
