MuskOx Flannels is an American privately owned outfitter and manufacturer of flannel shirts and heavyweight flannels for men. The company, based in Detroit, Michigan, designs, manufactures, distributes and sells men's outdoor clothing and flannel shirts. MuskOx sells its products via the MuskOx website as well as through authorized dealers in the United States. The company was established in Detroit in 2019 by M. Bradley Hoos. MuskOx originally focused on a variety of outdoor apparel in addition to uniquely woven flannel shirts. In 2020 the brand positioned itself to focus on heavyweight, classic fitting flannel shirts as their core products.
MuskOx manufactures their 100% cotton flannel fabrics and flannel shirts in Portugal. MuskOx donates a portion of every flannel sold to The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.
In 2023, MuskOx Flannels' signature Grand Flannel received the "Best Overall Flannel" by GearJunkie. Since then, the MuskOx Grand Flannel has been awarded "Best Overall Flannel" in 2024. In 2025 their Field Grand Flannel was awarded "Best Overall Flannel, stating, "the double-brushed cotton flannel is one of the softest flannels we’ve ever reviewed." — Steve Graepel, Contributing Editor, GearJunkie.[1]
Manufacturing and Cotton Sourcing
[edit]MuskOx sources their raw cotton from farms that are within the Better Cotton Initiative. Better Cotton Initiative is recognized as the world’s foremost cotton sustainability program. Founded in 2005 through a WWF-led roundtable, it has evolved into a global, multi-stakeholder organization dedicated to helping cotton-farming communities thrive while protecting and restoring the environment.[2]
MuskOx then weaves the cotton into flannel fabric and patterns, double brushes the fabric for softness, and hand cuts and sews their shirts in Portugal at a vertically integrated mill [3] Ranging from 8.2oz/sq yard to 15.5oz/sq yard, their flannels are heavyweight, thick, and offer a soft hand feel.
MuskOx flannel shirts are built with 100% cotton, a twill, and brushed inside and outside. Their flannel shirt buttons are made from recycled ocean-bound plastic in order to help minimize plastic pollution in our oceans.
