number9ine
[edit]number9ine is an international film and media research and development collective founded in 1985 by 9 Patrick di Santo. The collective is known for its experimental approach to narrative and non-narrative projects, blending elements of sound, visual art, and storytelling to create immersive experiences that challenge traditional media boundaries.
History and Mission
[edit]Founded in 1985, number9ine was conceived to provide interdisciplinary research, media, and artistic production across sound, film, and philosophical artforms. Drawing influence from early non-narrative films such as Baraka and Powaqqatsi, number9ine centers the concept of sentient-coded storytelling and emotional atmospherics as tools of inquiry and reflection.
The collective collaborates with a range of experimental artists, including Case Trick, Arthur Burrows, Charles Tracy, Michael H. Henderson, Mark Gasper, CR Reid, Molly Marx, and Amanda Pennington Knox. Many of its projects involve a synthesis of audio-visual and psycho-somatic experience, operating across both academic and underground artistic circuits.
Notable Projects
[edit]- PORTAL – A non-narrative film exploring frequency and daily ritual
- 35 CENTS – A documentary-style work on economic violence and dignity
- Ephigy – A serialized operatic ambient series produced with Case Trick
- Metro9 – A restoration and reinterpretation of Thea von Harbou’s Metropolis, featuring experimental opera and digital overlays. The film received the **Best Music Score** award at the Avant Garde Film Festival.[1]
Soundtracks for these films have been released on Apple Music, Beatport, TIDAL, and Spotify. The *Metro9* soundtrack, a 23-track album featuring collaborations with artists such as Case Trick, O'le, DXM, and 9 Patrick di Santo, was released on December 3, 2024.[2]
Distribution and Media Presence

Its projects have been featured in film showcases, festival circuits, and interviews such as Buzzslayers.[3]
Philosophy and Approach
[edit]number9ine emphasizes regional sovereignty in art, research methods, and the reactivation of symbolic language. Their artistic framework is aligned with the Original Intelligence (OI) model developed by di Santo, which combines ancienne cosmology, neurogenetics, decentralized spirit ritual frequency and histories.
