Obelisco Estate Winery is a boutique winery located in Woodinville, Washington, with an estate vineyard on Red Mountain in Washington State. Founded in 2007, the winery specializes in premium red wines, particularly Bordeaux-style blends and single varietal Cabernet Sauvignon.
History
[edit]Obelisco Estate was founded by Doug Long and partners in 2007, with the estate vineyard planted in 2003-2004 on Red Mountain.[1] The Long family brought extensive winemaking experience from Napa Valley, where Doug Long and his brothers had previously founded David Arthur Vineyards in 1981, which was named "Winery of the Decade" by Wine Spectator in 2000.[2]
The winery's first vintage in 2007 received immediate recognition when their Cabernet Sauvignon was named "Best Cabernet in Washington State over $20" by Seattle Magazine and received a Double Gold award from the Seattle Wine Awards.[3][4]
Doug Long passed away in 2017, and the winery is now operated by his daughters Melissa Long Vilar and Whitney Patterson.[1] In 2023, David Rosenthal, former head white winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle, was named as the winery's winemaker.[1]
Vineyard and production
[edit]The Obelisco Estate vineyard covers 30 acres on the southwest slope of Red Mountain and is noted for being one of the most densely planted vineyards in Washington State, with grape production limited to four pounds per plant.[2] The winery produces approximately 3,500 cases annually and focuses exclusively on estate-grown fruit.[1]
The vineyard specializes in red wine varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Syrah, with their flagship wine "Electrum" reflecting the percentage of plantings at the estate vineyard.[1]
Recognition and awards
[edit]Obelisco Estate has received numerous awards and high scores from major wine publications:

- Wine Enthusiast Magazine: 92 points and Cellar Selection for 2010 Electrum[4]
