Paul O'Callaghan
[edit]Paul O’Callaghan (born in Cork, Ireland) is a water scientist, sustainability advocate, and documentary producer. He is the founder and CEO of BlueTech Research and co-founder of the Brave Blue World Foundation. O’Callaghan is known for promoting water innovation through research, consulting, and film, and he is the creator of the Water Technology Adoption (WaTA) model, which examines how and when new water technologies enter the market.
Early life and education
[edit]O’Callaghan earned a degree in biochemistry from University College Cork, followed by a master’s in water resource management from Edinburgh Napier University. In 2021, he completed a PhD at Wageningen University & Research on innovation in water technology, where he co-authored several peer-reviewed publications on water technology adoption and diffusion.
Career
[edit]O’Callaghan began his career at The Body Shop, working on corporate sustainability and water reuse projects. He later volunteered for the World Wildlife Fund in Malaysia and subsequently joined engineering consultancy Atkins, where he worked on biosolids and sludge management projects. Observing the slow pace of technology adoption in the water sector led him to launch BlueTech Research in 2011.
At BlueTech, he developed a digital intelligence platform that helps corporations and investors assess water technology markets. His clients include multinational firms such as L’Oréal, Microsoft, and PepsiCo. He is also the founder of the BlueTech Forum, which convenes innovators, utilities, and corporates to advance sustainable water solutions.
Documentary work
[edit]In 2020, O’Callaghan co-produced the documentary Brave Blue World, narrated by Liam Neeson and featuring Matt Damon and Jaden Smith. The film, released on Netflix, showcases solutions to the global water crisis and innovations around the world. He also co-produced the 2024 sequel, Our Blue World, which premiered in New York on Earth Day 2024 and was screened at international festivals including Newport Beach and Kuala Lumpur.
