Rhinotales is an independent video game development studio founded in 2017 in Kazakhstan by Artyom Slesarenko, Daniil Kodubenko, and Dmitry Savchenko. Headquartered in the city of Karaganda, the studio is known for crafting immersive, story-driven experiences that blend cinematic storytelling with interactive gameplay mechanics.

History

[edit]

Rhinotales made its debut with the interactive thriller She Sees Red, a narrative experience in which player choices significantly shape the course of the story. Initially conceived as a small-scale demo, the project quickly evolved into a full-fledged commercial release. Over the course of ten months, the studio assembled a diverse and international team of over 130 contributors from Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus, the United States, and Russia.

Released in 2019 across PC, consoles, and mobile platforms, She Sees Red garnered acclaim for its mature tone, bold storytelling, and stylized visual direction. Translated into 22 languages, the game stood out in the genre of interactive cinema and marked a significant achievement for the regional industry.[1]

Rhinotales is widely recognized as a pioneer in regional interactive storytelling and was the first studio in the CIS to launch an interactive thriller.[2]

Projects

[edit]
  • She Sees Red (2019) — A cinematic interactive thriller in which the player's decisions shape the narrative outcome.[3][4]
  • Critical Shift (in development since 2019) — A turn-based tactical RPG set in a sci-fi mystery universe. The game emphasizes strategic depth and narrative complexity, and includes no microtransactions, aiming to deliver a challenging, story-rich experience.[5]

Industry Involvement

[edit]

Rhinotales plays an active role in nurturing the gaming ecosystem in Kazakhstan. As a partner of the Gamedev Center at Astana Hub, the studio mentors emerging developers, shares industry knowledge, and fosters innovation.

In 2023, Rhinotales represented Kazakhstan at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco. The studio was selected among 14 startups featured in the Silkroad Innovation Hub—an initiative showcasing promising technology ventures from Central Eurasia.[6] This participation provided Rhinotales with a global platform to present its work and establish strategic connections with international partners and investors.[7][8]

Legacy and Recognition

[edit]

Rhinotales has earned a reputation as one of Central Asia’s most ambitious and artistically driven studios in the interactive storytelling space. Its games are noted for their narrative sophistication, high production values, and distinctive use of choice-based mechanics that immerse players in emotionally resonant and atmospheric worlds.
