Rich Tipple (born 30 September 1986) is a British digital colourisation artist known for his work restoring and colourising classic episodes of Doctor Who for official BBC releases. His contributions include colour work on notable projects such as The Daleks in Colour[1][2][3][4] and The War Games in Colour[5][6][7], both of which were broadcast on BBC Four [2][6] and released internationally.[8][9][10]
Early Work
[edit]Tipple began gaining attention in the early 2020s by sharing fan-made colourised clips of classic black-and-white Doctor Who serials online. These projects were shared on social media and picked up by mainstream publications including Metro[11] and Gizmodo.[12]
His colourisation projects aimed to preserve the visual style of the original episodes while enhancing them for modern presentation.[7]
Professional Career
[edit]Following the attention his fan projects received, Tipple was invited to work on official BBC colourisations of classic Doctor Who serials.[13]
In 2023, he served as lead colourisation artist on The Daleks in Colour[2], a colourised adaptation of the 1963 serial The Daleks. The project was produced by Bad Wolf and BBC Studios as part of the show's 60th anniversary celebrations. It was broadcast on BBC Four[2] and later released on Blu-ray, DVD, and Steelbook in the United Kingdom[8], United States[9], and Australia.[10]
In 2024, Tipple returned as lead colourisation artist for The War Games in Colour, a 90-minute adaptation of the 1969 serial The War Games. As with The Daleks in Colour, the production was a collaboration between BBC Studios and Bad Wolf. It premiered on BBC Four in December 2024 and was accompanied by a DVD and Blu-ray release.[7]
Other Projects
[edit]In addition to serial colourisations, Tipple contributed to other aspects of Doctor Who media during the show's 60th anniversary.
Tipple, in collaboration with Kieran Highman, contributed to colourising archival clips used in the BBC's official 60th anniversary trailer[14][15], and a flashback sequence to the 1966 serial The Celestial Toymaker that appeared in the 2023 special The Giggle[16][17][18][19][20] - the third and final 60th anniversary special. The Giggle was released on DVD and Blu-ray on 18 December 2023 as part of the "60th Anniversary Collection".[21]
Media Appearances and Reception
[edit]Tipple has appeared on several BBC programmes to discuss his colourisation work, including BBC Breakfast,[22] BBC Radio Sussex,[23] BBC South East Today[24], and BBC Radio 5 Live.[25]
He has been interviewed and featured in print and online publications such as BBC News,[2][6] Doctor Who Magazine,[4] SFX Magazine,[13] Metro,[11] and Gizmodo.[12] Additionally, his work on related projects has been covered in sources including Radio Times[16][26] and Bleeding Cool.[27]
Tipple’s colourisation work has been described in media coverage as respectful and detailed.[12][11][13] In a 2024 interview with SFX Magazine, Tipple described The Daleks as "television heritage" and explained his aim to “tell the story in a way we couldn't do when it was black and white,” highlighting the use of a red eye in the infected Dalek as an example of this approach.[13]
