Rob Pursey (born 27 May 1964) is a British musician and record label co-founder, known for his work with Indie pop bands such as Heavenly, The Catenary Wires and Swansea Sound. He has been active figure in the indie music scene for over four decades. He has also had a successful career as television producer, creating multiple award-winning shows including Being Human.
Television career
[edit]Pursey started his television career as a script editor on long-running ITV series The Bill. In June 1995, he was appointed Head Of Development at Central TV. There, he worked on multiple television series, including Inspector Morse, Sharpe, Kavanagh QC, and created the series The Vice (1999–2003).
In 2001, Pursey founded independent production company Touchpaper Television, which became part of RDF Media in 2005.[1] He served as executive producer on several award-winning shows including Being Human (BBC, 2008–2013),[2] Single-Handed (RTÉ/ITV, 2007-10), The Queen's Sister (Channel 4, 2005),[3] City Of Vice (Channel 4, 2008), and Charlie (RTÉ, 2015),[4] Rebellion (RTÉ, 2016-19),[5] and Murder (BBC, 2013–2016).[6]
His work has received many nominations and awards. Notably, City of Vice won the Royal Television Society Judges' Award in 2008. Being Human received two BAFTA nominations, and won two Broadcast awards, in 2010 and 2011. Murder won a BAFTA Scotland award for best television drama in 2013.
Music career
[edit]Pursey's first serious involvement in music was in Bristol band The Five Year Plan, whose debut album, started in 1985, was finally released in 2023.[7] In 1985, Pursey briefly played bass in indie pop band Talulah Gosh.[8] From 1989, he gained wider recognition as a member of Heavenly, a band signed to influential Bristol-based Sarah Records and Olympia-based K Records.[9] Having recorded four albums, Heavenly disbanded in 1996 when drummer Mathew Fletcher took his own life, but reformed in 2023.[10]
Pursey found continued success in subsequent bands Marine Research (1997–2000),[11] Tender Trap (2002–2013),[12] Sportique (1998–2003),[13] The Catenary Wires (2015–2025),[14] and Swansea Sound.[15][16] In 2025, he collaborated with popular UK poet Brian Bilston on a series of 13 song-poems.[17]
In 2021, Pursey put his TV career on hold and co-founded independent record label Skep Wax Records alongside long-time musical collaborator Amelia Fletcher.[18] The label primarily releases new music from (mostly Indie pop) bands including Heavenly,[19] Swansea Sound,[20] The Catenary Wires,[21] Jeanines,[22] Lightheaded,[23] The Gentle Spring,[24] The Orchids,[25] Crumbs,[26] Sassyhiya,[27] Panic Pocket,[28] Special Friend[29] and Marlody.[30]
Personal life
[edit]Rob Pursey was born in Chipping Sodbury and brought up in Frampton Cotterell, Gloucestershire. He attended St Catherine's College, Oxford where he received a first class degree in English Literature. He is married to Amelia Fletcher and they have two daughters.[10]
