Robert K. Christensen is the George W. Romney Professor of public and nonprofit administration and the current director of the MPA Program at the Romney Institute of Public Service and Ethics in the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University.[1]

Education

Robert Christensen holds a B.A. in Russian (1997), an M.P.A. from the Marriott School of Management (2000), and a J.D., cum laude, from the J. Reuben Clark Law School (2000), all from Brigham Young University. He earned a Ph.D. in 2007 from Indiana University's O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, with concentrations in public management and public policy.[2]

Academic career

Dr. Christensen is a professor at Brigham Young University's George W. Romney Institute of Public Service and Ethics, where he also serves as Chair and MPA Director[1]. He has previously held faculty positions at Indiana University, the University of North Carolina Charlotte, and the University of Georgia, where he also directed the PhD Program in Public Administration and Policy.[3] His teaching and research focus on topics such as administrative environments, intergovernmental relations, nonprofit governance, public management, and state and local government policy.

Research and publications

Robert K. Christensen is a scholar in public administration[4] whose work spans themes of public service motivation, nonprofit management, judicial behavior, and institutional governance. His research contributes both theoretical frameworks and empirical insights across diverse institutional contexts, including the nonprofit sector, judiciary, and public sector workplaces.

Throughout his career, Christensen has contributed to interdisciplinary and collaborative research, frequently working with scholars across public administration, nonprofit studies, political science, and law. His research has been recognized with awards such as the Kooiman Prize for best paper in Public Management Review.[5]

Communicty and service work

Robert Christensen has held numerous leadership roles in prominent academic associations. Within the Public Management Research Association (PMRA), he currently serves as President (2023-present)[6] and previously served as a Vice President (2021–present) and Board Member from 2017 to 2021. His service includes active participation on several key committees, such as the Ethics Committee (2020–present[7]), the H. George Frederickson Award Committee (2021–present)[7], and the Election Committee, which he chaired from 2018 to 2020. He also contributed to the Social Media Ad Hoc Committee in 2020 and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee from 2019 to 2020, during which he worked on the Meier Travel Inclusion Award. In addition, Christensen has been deeply involved in the Academy of Management's Public and Nonprofit Division (PNP[8]), where he served in successive leadership roles, including Program Chair, Division Chair Elect, Division Chair, and Past Division Chair.[7]
