Draft:Search TV

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SearchTV.net (styled Search TV) is an advertisement-supported directory website that indexes hyperlinks to publicly available HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) playlists for live television channels, sporting events, feature films and music. The domain came online in the final quarter of 2021 and is operated alongside a number of similarly configured sites, including CineFlix.is, SearchMusic.org and SportsFootball.net.[1] All four projects reference a common policy document, the “Search TV Manifesto”, which sets out their position on digital rights and the legality of link indexing.[2]

Background

[edit]

Archived versions of the site indicate that SearchTV.net was publicly accessible by November 2021.[3] Its self-published “About” page states that the service “makes it easy for people living abroad to watch television from their home country.”[4] SearchTV does not host video files; instead, it supplies users with M3U8 playlist links that can be opened in media-player software such as VLC.[5]

Features

[edit]
  • Live-sports section – indexes football, basketball, Formula 1 and other events, with listings refreshed several times per hour.[6]
  • Country filters that group free-to-air national and regional channels.
  • Playlist export – users can download a plain-text list of HLS addresses.
[edit]

The following domains share user-interface elements, code snippets, or cross-linking with SearchTV.net:

Site Claimed launch Primary focus Source demonstrating connection
CineFlix.is 2022 Films and television series [7]
SearchMusic.org 2023 Music videos and radio streams [8]
SportsFootball.net 2024 Live football fixtures [9]
Manifesto.to 2024 Digital-rights manifesto [10]

“Search TV Manifesto”

[edit]

The “Search TV Manifesto” describes the operators’ intention to “protect users”, “remain online”, and support principles of free culture and open access to information.[2] Technology writers have noted stylistic similarities between the document and earlier cyber-libertarian statements from the 1990s.[11]

Reception

[edit]

Coverage by Italian-language technology blogs has highlighted the breadth of sports streams indexed by Search TV while cautioning that some links may point to content that infringes local broadcast rights.[12]

[edit]

As of May 2025, no public legal proceedings or regulatory takedown orders specifically targeting SearchTV.net have been reported in legal databases or the trade press. The site’s FAQ maintains that it “doesn’t host any streams, music or videos; we only provide links to broadcast signals that are already publicly available.”[13]
