Sentinel Group, commonly referred to as Sentinel and formerly known as Sentinel Group, is a full-service employee benefits consulting firm.[1] of about 250 employees headquartered in Wakefield, Massachusetts.[2]

Sentinel Group is the brand name for the Sentinel family of companies which includes Sentinel Benefits Group, LLC., Sentinel Pension Advisors, LLC., Sentinel Insurance Agency, Inc., and Sentinel Securities, LLC.

History

  • Sentinel was founded in 1987 by Jimmy, John and Anthony Carnevale over a family dinner.[3]
  • In 1993, Sentinel Insurance Agency, Inc. was formed to offer group insurance consulting services. The corporate headquarters moved from the Carnevales' home to an office in Wakefield, Massachusetts.
  • In 1998, COBRA[4] administration services were introduced when Sentinel entered the daily valuation recordkeeping business and formed Sentinel Pension Advisors, LLC. With 25 employees, the corporate headquarters moved to 107 Audubon Road, Wakefield, MA.[5]
  • In 2001, the first annual Educational Exchange (EdEx)[6] event took place at the Henderson House in Weston, MA.[7]
  • In 2002, the corporate headquarters moved to 601 Edgewater Drive in Wakefield, MA.[8]
  • In 2007, Sentinel was acquired by Focus Financial Partners.[9]
  • In 2010, Sentinel merged with the New York-based third party administrator, Geller Group, and its associated subdivisions — Geller Advisory Group, LLC and Geller Consulting Group, LLC.[10]
  • In 2011, Sentinel acquired Schloss & Company and moved into New York territory.[11]
  • In 2013, Sentinel was named a 'Top 10 Recordkeeper' by PLANSPONSOR Magazine.[12]
  • In 2014, the philanthropy program, SentinelCares,[13] was formed. Corporate headquarters moved to 100 Quannapowitt Parkway, Wakefield, MA.[14]
  • In 2015, PLANSPONSOR's 2015 Defined Contribution Survey ranked Sentinel second with a net-promoter score of 91.5% and nine Best-in-Class awards within the $5MM – $25MM total plan assets category.[15]
  • In 2016, Sentinel was awarded the 2016 Best-in-Retirement Business IMPACT Award™ by Charles Schwab.[16]
  • In 2020, Sentinel acquired Alliance Benefit Group of Michigan, a full-service retirement plan consulting and administration firm headquartered in Bingham Farms, Michigan.[17] Sentinel was recognized by The Boston Globe as a Top Place to Work[18] and named a 2021 Top Workplaces USA award winner.[19]
  • In 2023, Sentinel acquired Alliance Benefit Group Southwest, a retirement administration and record-keeping firm based in Albuquerque, New Mexico[20].

Departments

Sentinel has four different business lines: group insurance, retirement plan services, health and welfare accounts, and wealth management. Sentinel Insurance Agency, Inc. (SIA) acts as a group insurance broker for employers looking for insurance benefits.[21] Sentinel Benefits Group, Inc. (SBG) is split into a health & welfare administration and retirement plan administration services.[22] Sentinel Pension Advisors, LLC. (SPA) acts as a fiduciary and advises investments in retirement plans.[23] Sentinel Securities, LLC. (SSI) offers investment brokerage services[22].

Ownership

Sam Mitchell was named CEO in 2016[3]. Jim Carnevale is a partner and helped found the company in 1987.[24] Robert DiMase has been a partner since 1998.[25] Sentinel has been owned by Focus Financial Partners since it was acquired in 2007[9].

Sentinel has 3 offices in Wakefield, Massachusetts[2], Melville, Long Island (New York)[26] and Troy, Michigan[27]
