Slomosa is a Norwegian rock band from Bergen, formed in 2016. The band describes their music as "tundra rock," a Scandinavian twist on the desert rock genre, influenced by bands like Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. Their sound combines heavy riffs with melodic elements, reflecting the cold landscapes of their homeland.

History

[edit]

Slomosa was founded in 2016 by Benjamin Berdous (vocals, guitar), Anders Rørlien (guitar), Kristian Tvedt (bass), and Severin Sandvik (drums). The members, friends from Bergen's music scene, began jamming together without significant ambitions, focusing on creating music they enjoyed. Their first single, "Horses," was released in September 2019.[1].

In 2019, Rørlien departed the band, followed by Tvedt and Sandvik in 2020, as they pursued other endeavors. Berdous recruited guitarist Tor Erik Bye, bassist Marie Moe, and drummer Jard Hole, solidifying the current lineup just before the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite limited live performances during the pandemic, their self-titled debut album, released in August 2020 [2], garnered attention from rock blogs and playlists, increasing their popularity.

Post-pandemic, Slomosa embarked on extensive touring across Europe, performing in 17 countries and sharing stages with bands like Stöner, Orange Goblin, Sasquatch, King Buffalo, and Elder. Their energetic live shows and unique sound have earned them a reputation as a compelling live act.

In 2023, the band signed with Stickman Records [3] and began working on their second album. They released singles "Cabin Fever," "Rice," and "Battling Guns," leading up to their sophomore album, Tundra Rock, released on September 13, 2024, under Stickman, and licensed to MNRK Heavy [4] for the U.S. and Canada exclusively. The album was preceded by a listening party on Bandcamp and followed by tours in Europe and the United States [5]

Musical Style

[edit]

Slomosa's music is characterized by heavy, riff-driven compositions that blend elements of stoner rock, grunge, and punk. The band coined the term "tundra rock" to describe their sound, reflecting their Norwegian roots and the influence of the Palm Desert rock scene. Their music features melodic hooks, powerful rhythms, and a fusion of aggressive and atmospheric tones.

Tours and Performances

[edit]

Since their formation, Slomosa has steadily built a reputation as a formidable live act, known for bringing their self-described "tundra rock" to audiences across Europe and North America. Their early shows in their hometown of Bergen, Norway, quickly garnered attention for their energy and heaviness, leading to international touring opportunities.

After the release of their debut album in 2020, the band began supporting prominent acts in the stoner and heavy rock scenes, including performances with bands such as King Buffalo, Elder, and Greenleaf. These tours brought them to a variety of venues across Western and Central Europe and introduced them to a growing base of fans beyond Scandinavia.

In 2024, Slomosa embarked on their first-ever U.S. tour, joining Alkaline Trio [6] for over a dozen dates across the country. This marked a significant milestone for the band as they began to expand their audience in North America.

The band has also performed at many of Europe's leading rock festivals, including Desertfest, Sweden Rock, Hellfest, and Copenhell, where they shared the stage with top acts in the stoner, doom, and psychedelic rock genres. Their high-profile festival appearances have helped solidify their status as one of Norway’s most internationally recognized heavy rock bands in recent years.

Following a successful headline tour of the UK and Ireland [7]—which featured mostly sold-out shows—Slomosa returned to North America for another supporting run, this time joining alternative metal veterans Helmet as direct support [8]. The tour spanned over 20 shows across the United States and marked another milestone for the band: their first-ever performances in Canada, with dates in Toronto and Montreal. These extensive touring efforts further demonstrate Slomosa’s growing international reach and their ability to connect with audiences across diverse rock scenes.
