Sun Haipeng (Chinese: 孙海鹏; born September 8, 1979) is a Chinese animator, filmmaker, and screenwriter.

Sun Haipeng began to create the animated short film series of "Super Bao" in 2007. His animated short film Food War (Super Bao vs. Sushi Man) was released in 2009. He went on to make the comedy animated TV series Kungfood Season 1 (2014), which won the nomination for Best Animated Series at the 20th Shanghai TV Festival Magnolia Awards.[1]

In 2019, his feature animated film KungFood (Mei shi Da mao xian) was nominated for the Feature Film Contrechamp section at the 29th Annecy International Animated Film Festival.[2]

Sun won the Best New Director Award at the 30th Shanghai Film Critics Awards for his 2021 animated film I Am What I Am, which also received the Special Jury Award at the China Film Director's Guild Awards (2022). In 2024, the sequel I Am What I Am 2 written and directed by Sun, was released in theaters.

Early Life

Sun Haipeng was born on September 8, 1979, in Zhongxiang City, Hubei Province, China and grew up in a small town. He graduated from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, where he majored in Watercolor Painting.[3] Struggling to find a job with his major, Sun began teaching himself animation, studying until the early hours of the morning every day. After three months of intense learning, he finally landed his first job in 3D animation.[4]

Career

In 2007, Sun Haipeng started creating the "Super Bao (Bao Qiang)" animated short film series.[5] He wrote and directed the comedy animated short film Food War (Super Bao vs. Sushi Man), released on August 1, 2009, which is adapted from Bruce Lee's classic movies.

From 2014 to 2017, he launched the three seasons of the animated TV series Kungfood that have been distributed in over 100 countries and regions worldwide.[6] His feature animated film KungFood (Mei shi Da mao xian) was released in 2018, featuring voice performances by Yang Guangpuzhao, Meng Yu, and Zhang Zhe. The film was selected for the Special Competition - SICAF Asia at the Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival (2018)[7] and was nominated for the Feature Film Contrechamp section at the 29th Annecy International Animated Film Festival.[8] [9]

On December 17, 2021, the animated film I Am What I Am (Xiong Shi Shaonian) directed by Sun Haipeng was released in mainland China. The film follows A Juan, a young Cantonese village boy who must overcome self-doubt, ridicule and classism to realise his dream of competing in the Guangzhou Lion Dancing championship. The film won Best Animated Feature of Jury Award at the Beijing Student Film Festival (2023), and won the Special Jury Award at the China Film Director's Guild Awards (2022). Sun Haipeng also received the Best New Director Award at the 30th Shanghai Film Critics Awards (2023).[10]

On December 14, the sequal I Am What I Am 2 written and directed by Sun, was released in theaters. The film was again listed top ten films at the Shanghai Film Critics Award (2024)[11], and Sun won Best Director at the Beijing Student Film Festival (2025) for the film.
