Draft:Thatcher Hurd

  • Comment: The two Sports Illustrated articles seem to be the only sources which are both independent and not a simple database entry. I don't think they provide enough information to write an entire article about him. Ca talk to me! 06:14, 7 June 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment: Biographies of living people generally have stricter requirements than other articles - see WP:BLP for more info on this. It'd be good to have some of the unsourced statements get citations, as well as a bit more expansion of reliable sources to demonstrate notability before this can be accepted back to mainspace. Thatcher Hurd (born December 9, 2002) is an American professional baseball pitcher in the New York Yankees organization.

Early life

[edit]

Thatcher Hurd was born on December 9, 2002, in Berkeley, California.[1] He attended Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California, where he played baseball. During his high school career, he converted from a catcher to a pitcher. In November 2020, Hurd signed his National Letter of Intent to play college baseball at the University of California, Los Angeles.[2]

College career

[edit]

Hurd began his college baseball career with the UCLA Bruins. Prior to his first season at UCLA, Hurd made his collegiate summer baseball debut with the Bellingham Bells of the West Coast League in 2021, where he pitched in two games.[3][4] In 2022, his freshman year, Hurd pitched in nine games (six starts) with a 2–0 record, 1.06 ERA, and 48 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched. In April, he was shut down for the remainder of the 2022 season after enduring spondylolysis, a stress fracture in his lower spine. On June 9, Hurd entered the NCAA transfer portal.[5]

On June 29, 2022, Hurd announced his transfer to Louisiana State University.[6]

Hurd has received consideration as a top prospect for the 2024 Major League Baseball draft. Baseball publisher FanGraphs ranked Hurd as the fourth-best prospect in his class in January 2023.[7]

Professional career

[edit]

Hurd was selected by the New York Yankees in the third round, with the 89th overall selection, of the 2024 Major League Baseball draft.[8] He signed with the Yankees on July 22, 2024, receiving a signing bonus of $836,400.[9] Hurd made his professional debut with the FCL Yankees.

In February 2025, it was reported that Hurd would undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, sidelining him for the entire 2025 season.[10]
