Trace Fryer (born Tracy Ann Johnson) is a painter, illustrator, gallerist, and gallerist.

As an artist, she had also worked under the name Trace Johansson. As an artist, she explored the human-animal interaction. In 2020, her collection of works Animal-Human Art was published in The STEAM Journal,[1] an interdisciplinary, online publication.[2] STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. According to her biography at the journal:

Trace's work is exhibited and collected internationally. Her paintings are found in galleries and private collections of corporations, celebrities to non-profit organizations.

She was featured in art shows in the U.S. and Australia for curated shows discussing human-animal art.

In 2024, she married English musician and record producer John Fryer and together they formed the music group Something Romantical.[3][4]

Early life and career

Fryer earned her BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California in 2000 with a major in Illustration/Fine Arts.[5] She also had additional studies with Poet Laureate Maxine Kumin at Pitzer College. In 2005, Fryer's artwork was exhibited at the gallery of the Australasian Animal Studies Association (AASA), an Australian association of animal studies scholars, scientists, creative artists, and animal advocates.[6][7] In 2006, her work was featured in the Innate Wisdom show at the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego.[5] She would later be the founder of TAJ ART INC. Studio Gallery in 2016.[8]

In 2022, she was one of the artists in program led by the Sherman Oaks Chamber Foundation and the Studio City Business Improvement District (SCBID) for the painting of the utility boxes of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT). She had painted a picnic scene for the utility box at Van Nuys Boulevard at Hortense Street.[9]

Soundtrack for short film

In 2025, Fryer and her husband, John Fryer, formed the group Something Romantical and put together the music for the soundtrack for the short film The Winter Solstice Eruption by Lance Page of Page Films.[10][4]

The short film present the 2018 lower Puma eruption. Due to this, the summit caldera floor of the area had collapsed.[11] After the volcanic eruption, there was no volcanic activity for 2 years. On the night of December 20th, 2020, at about 9:30 PM, a volcanic eruption returned to Halema'uma'u Crater.[12] The short film by Lance Page with a soundtrack by Fryer and her husband visually presents these events.[13] Lance Page is a cinematographer featured in a variety of nature films, including Planet Earth II, Our Living World from Netflix, and Prehistoric Planet 2.[14]

Fryer's gallery, TAJ ART, was part of the collection of galleries in Los Angeles presenting Latin American and Latinx artwork in Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, which was art event celebrating Latin American art in over 70 museums and galleries in Los Angeles and Southern California held from September 2017 through early 2018.[15]

  • The solo exhibition of Steve Seleska, which was featured in ArtWeek magazine.[16]
  • The Perfectly Imperfect exhibition, curated with Jennifer Faist, with artwork for Barbara Kerwin, Mike Vegas, and Sandra Vista. The event had featured music from Randy Ray Mitchell, Tisa Adamson, and Brian Duncan, which was featured in Artillery Magazine.[17]

Animal studies exhibitions

The artwork of Fryer has been a part of variety of programs creating awareness for animals. She is trained and certified in of Interpretative Nature Education, and Healing Touch for Animals in Energy Medicine. She believes animals are sentient, conscious creatures that live in a state of awareness of being, and her artwork is ethereal, as well as her music with her husband John Fryer.[18] Examples of this are the following:

  • The gallery exhibition for the Australasian Animal Studies Association (AASA) (2005).[19][7]
  • The Innate Wisdom show at the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego in 2006.[5]
  • Her collection of works Animal-Human Art as published in The STEAM Journal in 2020.[2]
