Travis Beard born 14 February 1976) is an Australian multi-directional artist who expresses his creativity through a range of disciplines. His projects traverse music, film, photography and festivals. His work is edgy and thought-provoking, questioning the status quo and pushing audiences to consider the world from an alternative perspective.
Background
[edit]Travis was born in Mornington, Victoria Australia and grew up in Mt Martha. He lived in Afghanistan for 7 years, which is chronicled in his blog Kabul Korrespondence He has worked as a photojournalist, teacher, filmmaker, musician and festival director.[1][2][3][4]
Photography
[edit]Travis studied photojournalism at Griffith University; Queensland College of the Arts[5], graduating in 1997. He worked as a freelancer for a French agency PictureTank [6] and Felix Features from 1998-2008. He traveled to Afghanistan in November 2001 and subsequently his images from south west Afghanistan were published in the Age newspaper in Melbourne Australia. He moved to Kabul permanently in 2006 where he taught at the country’s first media school; Aina. [7] [8] [9]
Skateboarding
[edit]Travis brought the first skateboard to Afghanistan in June 2007[10] and later that year went on to establish the countries first skateboarding school skateistan along with Sharna Nolan and Oliver Percovich Skateistan[11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16][17][18]
Street Art
[edit]In 2010 Travis teamed up with photographer David Gill to create the artist collective; Combat Communications. Their first graffiti project; Cost Of War was supported by Oxfam.[19] The British press dubbed the group 'Talibanksy'.[20][21] [22] [23] Later the same year, Travis and David, teamed up with artists/mentors Aman Mojadidi, Chu and War Boutique they conducted a graffiti workshop called Wallords for both male and female Afghans.[24][25][26][27]
Music
[edit]Travis began playing bass and then guitar at the age of 12. His teacher was Steve Warner. Travis joined expat underground rock band White City Kabul in 2008.[28] [29] In 2001 they embarked on a tour of the 'Stans; Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan ad Pakistan. [30]They released Landlocked in 2014. [31] White City Kabul toured the US in 2014 including performing at SXSW.[32][33][34][35][36]
Travis founded Afghanistan's first contemporary music & arts festival Sound Central Festival. It was funded by 10 embassies including the US embassy Kabul between 2011 to 2013. Over the 3 years more than 2500 Afghans attended the free festival. [37][38][39] [40][41] [42][43][44][45]Rolling Stone Middle East dubbed him Afghanistan’s godfather of rock n roll.
The site of the 2013 festival; Institute France Afghanistan was hit by a suicide bomber on the 11th of December 2014, subsequently Sound Central Festival ceased to continue.
Travis went onto form Pit Panther Project with Archibald Gallet and Andreas Steffanson in 2009. They release the Lost Levantine Tapes album in 2021.[46][47]
Travis’ solo project; NotB412 released the debut album Asymmetrical Power July 2021. The music is described as Cerebral-TripHop-Dub. The first single: Ghost in the Machine explores the issue of singularity.
Travis has produced numerous music video clips for artists including; Paranoid Earthling, Rose Riebl, Sami & Shaheed and District Unknown.
Documentary film
[edit]Rockabul RocKabul is a documentary film that was produced between 2009 and 2018 in Afghanistan by Australian filmmaker Travis Beard. [48]The film had its world premiere at the 2018 Rotterdam International Film Festival. [49] It has been featured in over 50 film festivals. Bill Gould from the American alternative metal band Faith No More is an Executive Producer on the film and describes it as “A coming of age documentary which deals with youth identity and freedom of expression”. [50][51][52] Travis, Bill and District Unknown guitarist Qais spoke at Poptech conference 2017
Travis was a camera operator in production of KABUL AT WORK (2013), FRAME BY FRAME (2015) and AFGHAN CYCLES (2017). Travis also contributed with footage used on MOTELY'S LAW (2015), JIRGA (2018), SOFT SKIN (2021).
Writing
[edit]In 2008 Travis along with Jeremy Kelly, Jason Bresler and Marius Marais founded the Kabul Knights Motorcycle Club[53][54] In 2009 Jason Bresler was shot dead by his own security guard in a heroin smuggling scandal that he uncovered while working as country director at DHL.[55] [56]Travis is currently working on a novel about motorcycling in Afghanistan titled: The Bullet is Faster than the Bike.
