Uma Subedi (Nepali: उमा सुवेदी) is a Nepali writer, social worker, and cultural advocate, known for her contributions to contemporary Nepali literature through fiction and essays focused on women's experiences, disability rights, and rural identity. She has authored several books including Toda, Iti, and Ma Darauchu, and is widely recognized for portraying authentic female perspectives in Nepali society.

Early life and education

[edit]

Uma Subedi was born and raised in eastern Nepal. Despite experiencing physical disability from a young age, she pursued education and artistic expression with persistence. She was a performer and cultural activist early in her life, including a documented dance performance in South Korea in her youth.[1]

Literary career

[edit]

Subedi’s literary voice emerged from her deep-rooted experiences as a woman with a disability and as a rural cultural worker. Her fiction frequently explores themes of gender, body, and marginalization in Nepal’s patriarchal society. In an interview with *The Kathmandu Post*, Subedi stated, “When women write about women, it is based on reality, not assumption,” noting that much of Nepali literature historically lacked this authenticity.[2]

Her novel Toda (2020) and short story collection Iti (2021) both center on the lived experiences of Nepali women. She also frequently speaks on how literature serves as a bridge between geography, gender, and trauma.[1]

Books

[edit]
  • Toda – A novel addressing disability, womanhood, and stigma in a conservative rural setting.
  • Iti – A collection of short stories exploring identity, trauma, and female solidarity.
  • Ma Darauchu – A reflective prose work engaging with societal fear, vulnerability, and emotional resistance.

Recognition

[edit]

Subedi has participated in major South Asian literary festivals including the Jaipur Literature Festival and the Nepal Literature Festival. Her advocacy for inclusive storytelling has made her a prominent voice in contemporary Nepali writing.
