Vionlabs AB is a Swedish artificial intelligence company based in Stockholm. Founded in 2010, it develops machine learning tools that analyze long-form video to extract mood, emotional tone, and contextual metadata. Its software is used to support content discovery, personalization, and operational workflows for broadcasters and streaming platforms.
In 2020, Broadcast Magazine described the company's Emotional Fingerprint API as a cloud-based service that measures the "emotional structure" of individual video frames.[1] FEED Magazine profiled Vionlabs in 2019 as a company "using AI in remarkable ways to get the right content to the right viewer at the right time."[2] In a 2020 report, technology analyst firm Omdia highlighted the platform's use of cognitive AI to improve metadata workflows and video ROI.[3]
History
[edit]Vionlabs was established in 2010 and initially focused on video indexing technologies. In 2017, it began developing AI-based products to support emotional and narrative analysis of video content. The company name is derived from "Video on Demand Laboratory."
As of 2025, Vionlabs reported processing over one million videos in more than 60 countries and 99 languages.[4] The company's clients include broadcasters, telecom operators, and streaming platforms across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
In 2023, Vionlabs partnered with Plex to deliver mood-based preview clips and metadata tagging. The collaboration was reported by LightReading.[5]
Technology
[edit]Vionlabs develops AI systems that combine computer vision, audio processing, and natural language analysis to extract structured metadata from video content. Its models are trained on more than 100,000 hours of data and support API-based integration into third-party media platforms.
The company's services are organized into two product lines:

- Preview Clips & Shorts: Generates short-form, mood-driven previews from long-form content, optimized for mobile and streaming platforms.
- Custom Thumbnails: Detects clear, relevant frames using character tracking, OCR, blur analysis, and nudity filtering.
Efficiency Suite
[edit]- Intro, Recap & End Credit Detection: Supports "Skip Intro" and other playback features by tagging content structure points.
- Ad-Break Detection: Marks suitable ad-insertion points by analyzing scene changes, mood, and dialogue patterns.
- Contextual Advertising: Applies IAB taxonomy, genre, and mood tags at the scene level to improve targeting and brand safety.
Awards and Recognition
[edit]Vionlabs received recognition from several industry outlets:
- Shortlisted for the **CSI Awards 2024** in the categories "Best use of AI or Machine Learning in video" and "Best advance in AdTech or Monetisation Technology".[6]
