Vionlabs

[edit]

Vionlabs AB is a software company based in Stockholm, Sweden. It develops artificial intelligence (AI) technologies used to analyze long-form video and generate metadata related to mood, tone, and context. The company's products are used by streaming services and broadcasters to enhance search, discovery, preview generation, and advertising workflows.

History

[edit]

Vionlabs was established in 2010. Initially focused on video indexing, it later shifted toward AI-based analysis of audiovisual content. Its technology extracts structural and emotional information from video to support functions such as recommendation systems and automated preview generation.

In 2019, Vionlabs was profiled by FEED Magazine, which described its use of AI as a means to improve the alignment between viewer preferences and content discovery.[1]

In 2020, industry analyst firm Omdia identified the company’s platform as a cognitive AI tool that could increase operational efficiency in video metadata production.[2]

Technology

[edit]

Vionlabs offers AI-based tools that extract metadata from video, including genres, moods, keywords, and scene boundaries. The system combines visual, audio, and narrative features to produce content-level metadata without relying on transcripts or scripts. Its applications include:

  • Metadata tagging (genre, mood, keywords)
  • Thumbnail and preview clip generation
  • Scene segmentation and ad-break detection
  • Detection of intros, recaps, and credits

Its products are accessed via API and are designed to integrate with video-on-demand systems and content operations platforms.[3]

Deployments and Clients

[edit]

As of 2025, Vionlabs reported that its technology had been used to process over 1 million videos across 60 countries and in more than 99 languages.[3]

Customers include Plex,[4] Canela Media, Crunchyroll, Hulu Japan, Paramount+, and Pluto TV. The company’s integration with Zeam Media was announced in 2025 to support editorial workflows for local content.[5][6]

Recognition

[edit]

Vionlabs has received industry recognition through award programs and trade publications:

  • Finalist in the 2024 CSI Awards in the categories “Best use of AI or Machine Learning in video” and “Best advance in AdTech or Monetisation Technology”.[7]
  • Winner of a Best of Show Award at NAB Show 2023, listed by TVBEurope.[8]
  • Included in coverage of Cineverse's AI-powered discovery solutions at NAB Show 2024, alongside other AI technology providers.[3]
