ERT News (Greek: ΕΡΤ News), is a Greek free-to-air television 24 hour news channel owned and operated by state-owned public broadcaster Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (Greek: EPT – Ελληνική Ραδιοφωνία Τηλεόραση). It began broadcasting on 3 March 2022, replacing Deutsche Welle's terrestrial broadcast through ERT's multiplexer. Initially, it only broadcast news content from ERT1, while since 5 September 2022 it has been broadcasting an autonomous program (except news bulletins). After 2 weeks (20 September) it broadcasts all over Greece. Its morning program, as well as three of the channel's seven main news bulletins (05:30, 12:00 and 18:00), will be broadcast by ERT1 as of September 2023.
History
[edit]ERT's management had planned the establishment of the station for autumn 2022, however, Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to the station's immediate operation, albeit at an early stage. The station broadcast for the first time on March 3, on the frequency from which the English-language Deutsche Welle show was broadcast by ERT. The operation of the station was aimed at immediately informing those who were not familiar with or did not have access to the internet and the hybrid ERTFLIX. ERT's desire for the channel's consolidation in the television landscape became known later.
The channel continued to broadcast on a pilot stage until September 5, when it began broadcasting on its own program.
ERT had reported that the channel would start its nationwide broadcast exclusively with a high-definition signal on 19 September 2022, replacing ERT1's standard-definition show. However, the channel began broadcasting a day later, but in standard clarity and on a separate frequency. Finally, from 24 May 2023, its broadcast began in high definition image (High Definition 1080i).
Programs
[edit]The channel mainly broadcasts news programmes, news bulletins and news broadcasts. A part of the program is complemented by Euronews content, short videos from abroad, while from 00:30 to 05:30 a repeat of the day's programs is broadcast along with short news at full time. Euronews has been supplying the channel with programs since June 2022 with an agreement that lasts one year.
The channel also took over all of ERT's news bulletins, with the exception of regional bulletins produced and broadcast by ERT3.
