Electrek is an American news website dedicated to electric transportation and sustainable energy.[2] For a long time, Electrek was known for its overwhelmingly positive coverage of electric vehicles in general, and Tesla in particular. This highly favorable stance[3][4][5], which included the main authors disclosing ownership of Tesla stock, significant profits from Tesla referral programs, and personal ownership of Tesla vehicles[6][2], drew criticism from some automotive journalists. However, in recent years, a notable shift has occurred. The site, and particularly its editor-in-chief Fred Lambert, has become increasingly critical of Tesla, especially concerning the company's focus on Full Self-Driving (FSD), perceived missteps by Elon Musk, and broader business decisions[7]. This shift comes after the owner, Seth Weintraub, disclosed a near-total divestment from Tesla stock in early 2020[8].

History

[edit]

Founded in 2013 by Seth Weintraub in New York, the site is part of the 9to5 network.[9][10] In 2015, Fred Lambert joined Electrek as a contributing writer, later having been promoted over the years and becoming editor-in-chief. [11][12]
