- February 13 - Julian and Stephen Marley, sons of reggae artist Bob Marley, are arrested in Northern Florida after officers find marijuana in their car. The Marley kids are released on $500 bail each.
- February 19 - A Los Angeles, California Superior Court jury finds James Brown innocent on charges of sexually harassing a former employee.
- March 1 - Doreen Waddell, a former vocalist with the group Soul II Soul, is struck by cars and killed while running along the highway after fleeing from a store where she had been accused of shoplifting in Southern England
- March 16 - Liza Minnelli marries record producer David Gest. It is Minnelli's fourth marriage.
- April 4 - Guitarist for The Calling, Aaron Kamin suffers a severe electrical shock during soundcheck for a performance in Bangkok. Kamin is rushed to a local hospital and is released after being treated for burns to the hands.
- October 30 - Warren Zevon is featured on the Late Show with David Letterman as the only guest for the entire hour. Zevon performs several songs and talks in length about being diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer.
- November 29 - The Concert For George is held at the Royal Albert Hall in London as a memorial to George Harrison on the first anniversary of his death, under the musical direction of friend Eric Clapton. Performers included Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Ravi Shankar, Billy Preston and others. The event benefitted the Material World Charitable Foundation
