Frederick Bernard Singleton (1926 – 1988) was a British historian, academic and author.
Biography
[edit]He was born in Hull in 1926 and educated at Hull Grammar School.[1]
He was married and had four children.[1]
He died in January 1988 in Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
Education
[edit]He studied Geography at Leeds University from 1947 to 1952 and received a B.A (Hons), Dip. Ed and M.A., with a thesis entitled “Kalevala and the Historical Geography of Finland”.[1]
Career
[edit]Academics
[edit]His teaching career began at Carlton Grammar School in Bradford with the subjects of history and geography in 1953-1955.[1]
In 1963, he became a lecturer in geography at Bradford University and rose to a Readership in Yugoslav Studies in 1977. He was the Chairman of the School until his retirement in 1980, and kept a close contact with it as an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow.[2]
Politics
[edit]He was active in student politics, becoming Vice-President of the Leeds University Students' Union and also the Vice-President of the National Union of Students from 1951 to 1953. He served as a member of the Labour Party's East-West Committee.[3]
Military
[edit]His military service occurred during 1944-1947 with the Royal Navy and included a period on the cruiser HMS Aurora.[3]
