Galaxy AI is a suite of artificial intelligence (AI) features developed by Samsung Electronics for its Galaxy line of mobile devices. Introduced in January 2024 with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy AI combines on-device and cloud-based AI technologies to enable a range of intelligent features across Samsung’s ecosystem. The suite includes functions such as real-time translation, AI-powered photo editing, and generative search tools.[4][5]

Galaxy AI combines Samsung’s proprietary AI models with partner technologies, such as Google's Gemini AI, to deliver a range of intelligent, context-aware functionalities.[6] The AI suite is designed to enhance user experience by providing real-time assistance, content creation tools, and productivity features.[7]

AI Communication

Call Assist

Enhances phone calls through Live Translate, which supports two-way voice and text translation during calls and Text Call, which enables real-time text-based communication by transcribing and vocalizing responses. Both features are built into the native Phone app on supported Galaxy devices and are designed to improve accessibility and multilingual communication.[8][9][10]

Writing Assist

Is an AI-powered feature in the Samsung Keyboard that provides context-aware tools for real-time translation, message generation, and writing refinement. The feature supports composing responses across various platforms—including messaging apps, email, and social media—by adjusting tone and style (e.g., professional or casual), checking grammar and spelling, and generating suggested replies.[11][12][13]

Interpreter

Provides real-time translation during voice and video calls, enabling communication between speakers of different languages. It supports multilingual communication in contexts such as business and travel. The feature offers on-screen translations and enables two-way conversations with automatic language detection.[14]

AI Notetaking

Captures key points during meetings or lectures to automatically generate organized notes. It adapts to the user’s note-taking style, providing summaries with highlighted key information for easy review and sharing. It also includes formatting and organization tools for Samsung Notes to support usability and readability.[14][15]

Transcript Assist

Integrated into the native Voice Recorder app, it provides advanced capabilities for transcribing, summarizing, and translating voice recordings. This feature enables users to convert spoken content into written text, generate concise summaries, and access translations directly within the app, enhancing productivity and accessibility.[15]

AI Camera

The ProVisual Engine is an AI-powered imaging system developed by Samsung Electronics for mobile devices. It enhances images through scene recognition and real-time optimization, adjusting color, dynamic range, and noise levels. Users can fine-tune images using manual controls, including brightness, contrast, saturation, and sharpness.[16][17][18]

Introduced as part of Samsung’s ProVisual Engine, Nightography is a feature designed to improve low-light photography by applying noise reduction techniques and utilizing advanced sensor technology. It adjusts exposure settings and reduces motion blur to enhance image and video quality in dark environments.[19][20]

AI Explore

Allows users circle content on the screen to instantly search for relevant information without leaving the app. It can identify products, landmarks, text, and more within the selected area. This feature enables access to context-specific search results and supports multitasking without interrupting ongoing tasks.[14][21]

AI Select

Designed to support user interaction by providing contextually relevant recommendations based on on-screen content. For example, it may suggest setting a photo as wallpaper or creating a GIF from a video. The feature uses AI to analyze displayed content and provide suggestions intended to simplify common tasks.[22][23][24][25]

Browsing Assist

Generates concise summaries of text-based web content within the Samsung Internet browser, helping users quickly grasp key points without reading the entire page. The feature currently supports only processing and translating textual information, and is designed to improve information accessibility and reading efficiency.[26][27]

AI Photo Edit

Sketch to Image

Uses artificial intelligence to generate stylized images from various input types, such as sketches, photos, or text descriptions. It supports photo-based, drawing-based, and text-based image generation, applying AI-driven enhancements and artistic filters to produce stylized images. The feature works with the S Pen, supports voice input for prompt-based creation, and is used within within the Samsung Gallery app, Samsung Notes and Edge Panel.[28][29][30]

Portrait Studio

Uses artificial intelligence to generate stylized portraits images from photo or sketch input. It supports both photo-based and drawing-based portrait generation, applying AI-driven enhancements and visual effects to produce refined, stylized images. The feature is available within the Samsung Gallery app and can be used with standard touch input.[29][31][32]

Generative Edit

Enhance photo editing by allowing users to manipulate images with advanced capabilities such as object removal, background expansion, and intelligent resizing. This tool leverages artificial intelligence to reconstruct and fill in missing areas, maintaining the integrity and quality of the original image.[33][34][35]

Audio Eraser

Identifies and removes unwanted Detects and removes background noise during voice calls to improve audio clarity. This allows users to hear the other party more clearly, in environments with background noise. The feature automatically distinguishes between voices and ambient sounds, helping maintain conversation quality in various real-world situations.[36]

Auto Trim

Designed to assist with video editing by automatically identifying and extracting segments of footage that are likely to be engaging based on visual or contextual cues, this feature enables the creation of shorter highlight reels while reducing the need for manual editing.[37][38]

Instant Slo-Mo

Is a feature that applies slow-motion effects to video segments after recording. It uses AI-powered frame generation to interpolate additional frames, allowing slow-motion playback without requiring pre-planning or specific recording modes. The feature is activated by playing a video in the Gallery app and tapping and holding the screen at the desired moment.[39][40][41]

AI Productivity

Now Brief

Introduced with One UI 7 as part of the Galaxy AI suite, this feature provides users with daily updates such as weather, calendar events, and news summaries. It uses on-device AI to provide contextual briefings at relevant times, aiming to keep users informed with minimal interaction.[42]

Now Bar

Developed alongside One UI 7, Bar is a customizable, persistent toolbar designed to enhance on-screen accessibility. It provides quick access to live activities, routines, and application shortcuts. The feature allows users to interact with selected functions directly from the lock screen or home screen.[42][43][44]

Cross-app Action

Allows users to perform actions—such as searching, translating, or creating calendar events—based on selected text or content, without switching between apps. It operates across supported Galaxy apps and select third-party apps, by recognizing context and suggesting relevant next steps. This feature helps streamline tasks in applications such as Samsung Notes, Messages, Calendar, and others.[45][46][47]

AI Assist

Provide distinct input methods within the Galaxy device interface. Bixby supports voice-based hands-free operation, while Bixby Vision facilitates real-time recognition of objects and text through the camera.

  • Bixby: A voice assistant that allows users to control various AI-related functions through spoken input. It supports voice-triggered access to selected smart features and system tools. It can be activated by voice command (e.g., “Hi Bixby”) or via the side key on supported Galaxy devices.[48][49]
  • Bixby Vision: A camera-based feature that uses AI to identify objects, translate text, and scan barcodes. It is accessible via the Camera or Gallery app and provides contextual information based on visual input.[50]

Health Assist

Is an AI-based feature within the Samsung Health app that provides health insights and recommendations. It calculates an Energy Score to provide users with a daily assessment of their physical and mental readiness. This score considers factors such as sleep patterns, activity levels, and heart rate variability, offering a simple indicator of recovery status for daily activities. The feature integrates data from compatible Galaxy devices, including Galaxy smartphones, Galaxy Watches, and the Galaxy Ring, to present health data collected from these devices.[51][52][53]

Generative Wallpaper and Photo Ambient

Generative Wallpaper and Photo Ambient are Galaxy AI features designed to personalize the Galaxy device’s visual appearance based on user input and environmental context.[54]

  • Generative Wallpaper: Introduced with One UI 6.1, this feature uses on-device generative AI to create wallpapers from user-selected keywords, styles, or themes. It reflects Samsung’s application of AI-generated content for visual customization.[55]
  • Photo Ambient: Uses AI to adjust wallpaper appearance based on the time of day, ambient lighting, and the visual characteristics of a selected photo. It enables context-aware wallpaper changes by analyzing environmental conditions.[56][57]

These features leverage on-device AI for privacy-sensitive tasks while utilizing cloud-based AI for complex processing needs.[58]

Supported Devices

Galaxy AI debuted with the Galaxy S24 series in January 2024. Samsung has announced that AI features will be free to use on supported devices until the end of 2025.

Samsung initially introduced Galaxy AI with the Galaxy S24 series. However, through software updates, the company has expanded AI support to various existing Galaxy models.[59]

Samsung has also indicated plans to expand Galaxy AI to additional Galaxy devices through future software updates.[60]

Privacy and Ethics

Privacy protection and ethical AI development are positioned as important considerations in the development of Galaxy AI. To safeguard user data,

  • On-device processing is used for sensitive AI functions, minimizing data transmission to external servers.
  • Encrypted cloud-based AI is employed selectively for high-processing tasks.
  • Samsung’s AI ethics principles focus on fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI deployment.

Samsung has stated that user data processed by AI features will not be stored or used for training AI models unless explicitly permitted by the user[61]
