Hakan Akbaş (born 1969) is a Turkish-American business executive and strategic advisor. He is the founder of Strategic Advisory Services and serves as Turkey Lead and Senior Advisor at Dentons Global Advisors (DGA, formerly Albright Stonebridge Group). His work focuses on US-Türkiye relations, corporate strategy, business development, government affairs, geopolitics, and foreign direct investment.
Life and career
[edit]Akbaş was born in Istanbul, Turkey.[citation needed] He graduated from Galatasaray High School first in his class in 1988 and received a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from Boğaziçi University in 1993. He completed his MBA at the University of Rochester's Simon Business School in 1995.[1][2][3]
Akbaş began his career at Xerox Corporation, where he served at the Corporate Business Strategy Office, later co-founded and led business development operations for Xerox Global Services. He later served as Chief Marketing Officer at Document Sciences Corporation, which was later acquired by EMC.[4][5]
From 2006 to 2011, Akbaş was Executive Vice President at Sabancı Holding. He led corporate strategy, business development, and insurance operations, and served as an advisor to the group’s chairperson Güler Sabanci. During his tenure, he was involved in M&A, joint ventures, portfolio restructuring, and large-scale privatization projects.[6][7][8]
In 2012, he founded Strategic Advisory Services, a trusted bipartisan government affairs firm.[9] He was recruited by Madeleine Albright to the Albright Stonebridge Group the same year, advising global clients on geopolitical and economic issues related to Turkey. The firm later became part of Dentons Global Advisors, where Akbaş continues to serve as a Senior Advisor.[10][11]
In 2024, he assumed the role of Turkey Lead at Dentons Global Advisors, supporting clients in commercial diplomacy, market access, and global risk management.[12][11]
Akbaş is a Turkish Treasury-certified angel investor with ongoing investments. He has served on the boards of Temsa, Kordsa Global, Vice Chairman of Aksigorta, Chairman of Avivasa, Chairman of Bossa, Vice Charman of Yünsa, Mondelēz International Turkey, Baydöner, Mondi Tire Kutsan, Vice Chairman of Arena Bilgisayar and Vice Chairman of Demir Sağlık. He has held advisory roles with Endeavor Turkey since 2012 and was a member of the Corporate Governance Association of Turkey from 2012 to 2023. He is also affiliated with AmCham Turkey and the U.S.-Turkey Business Council.[11]
Akbaş is widely recognized as a geopolitical and economic expert on U.S.–Turkey relations. He appears frequently on major television networks including CNN Türk, Habertürk, and NTV. He has also appeared in international outlets such as CNBC, Reuters, and the Financial Times, providing analysis on U.S.-Turkey relations, international trade, and geopolitical developments.[7][13][14]
