Moerahwati (November 27, 1943 – September 12, 2019), better known by her stage name Ida Laila was an indonesian dangdut singer popular throughout the 1970s and 1980s, with popular renderings of songs such as Abdul Malik Buzaid's Keagungan Tuhan (Indonesian: 'God's greatness') as well as many original recordings such as Sepiring Berdua (Indonesian: 'to share a plate').[1][2] She made her debut in the year 1960 with her single Siksa Kubur (Indonesian: 'grave torture'), a song about the Islamic doctrine of the afterlife set to the melody of Woh Din Yaad Karo's soundtrack Yaar Jinhe Tum Bhul Gaye Ho. Her career reached its peak during the 1970s and 1980s when she was under the band O.M. Awara, singing with fellow artists such as Mus Mulyadi and S. Achmadi. Throughout her singing career, she has received many achievements, such as the 1987-1988 HDX Awards for her song Sepiring Berdua[3] and the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Awards.[4] From the years 1997-1998 onwards, due to the dwindling popularity of her genre of dangdut, she largely left her singing career in favor of becoming a religious preacher. Starting from 2011, she stopped making public appearances due to old age.[5]

Personal life

[edit]

Ida Laila was born to Abdul Syukur[6] and Murji’ah as the oldest of two siblings. She had one known younger brother named Usman, though his whereabouts are unknown. She married her husband Mulyono in the year 1963, the same year she would debut in the band Orkes Melayu Sinar Kemala. They had 5 children, one of which had already died in 2019.[7] Her first son, Agung Murjianto, represented her to claim the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Awards.[8]

Death
