Jon Hartley is a Canadian economist and Policy Fellow at the Hoover Institution.
Early life and education
[edit]Hartley was born on November 11, 1989,[1] in Ontario, Canada. He graduated with honors from the University of Chicago in 2011, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Mathematics. He earned an MBA specializing in Finance, Business Economics, and Public Policy at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, in 2017. Following that, he completed a Master of Public Policy (MPP) at the Harvard Kennedy School.[2] He is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Economics at Stanford University.[3]
Career
[edit]Hartley serves as a Policy Fellow at the Hoover Institution[4][5] and as a Research Fellow at the Civitas Institute at the University of Texas at Austin.[6] He is also a Senior Fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute[7] and an affiliated scholar at the Mercatus Center.[8] In 2016, Hartley served as economic policy adviser to the 2016 Jeb Bush presidential campaign.[9][10]
Economic Club of Miami
[edit]In 2021, Hartley co-founded the Economic Club of Miami.[9] He serves as the founding chair[11][12] and created the Club with the assistance of Jeb Bush.[9][13] The club has hosted events with individuals from a variety of backgrounds such as economic advisors to Chile's left-leaning president Gabriel Boric,[9] asset fund managers from Harvard[14] and Kenneth Griffin, CEO of Citadel, LLC,[15] as well as Miami mayor Francis Suarez.[15] Hartley has served as a speaker at the Club's conference as well as Anthony Scaramucci, Mary Kissel, and Tomas Philipson.[9] Guests have included Congressman Patrick Murphy, University of Miami professor Noah Williams and former Rockefeller Foundation president Judith Rodin.[16]
Awards and recognition
[edit]Hartley was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in Law & Policy in 2017, and the Wharton 40 Under 40 list.[17][18] He hosts Capitalism and Freedom in the 21st Century, a podcast affiliated with the Hoover Institution.[19]
His writing has appeared in media outlets, including Forbes, The Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. Additionally, he has appeared on CNBC, Fox Business, Bloomberg, and NBC.[20]
Hartley made a cameo appearance in the 2013 Martin Scorsese film, The Wolf of Wall Street.[2]
