Kamla is a first-person survival horror game developed by Pune-based Mad Mantra Games.[6] It was released in on 7 May 2024 for Windows,[7] and on 8 February 2025 for Android and iOS.[8]

Plot
[edit]Kamla is set in a rural area in India in the 1980s. The player, a tantrik priest, has been called to a mansion to exorcise a demon out of a newlywed wife named Kamla. Upon her possession, Kamla's husband abandoned her to save his life.[11] As the priest explores the mansion to collect the items needed for the exorcism, the possessed Kamla tries to search for him to stop the ritual from taking place.[12]
Upon collecting all the items, the priest arranges them in the altar and recites the Hanuman Chalisa, forcing the spirit to leave Kamla's body and saves her in the process.[11]
Development and release
[edit]Kamla was developed by MadMantra Games, an indie studio founded in August 2023 by Shubham Rajanwar, an Indian game developer who relocated to Germany. After securing a remote job with flexible hours, Rajanwar recruited three collaborators, including designer Prashant M, to establish the studio. The team operated entirely remotely during development.[13]
The studio aimed to work on a game based on Indian folklore and culture.[12] The developers of the game took inspiration from games such as 7 Days to Die and Granny, which also involve completing tasks and surviving for a certain duration.[14]
On Android, Kamala received almost 1.35 million pre-registrations before its release on 8 February.[15] The game rose to popularity due to its eerie environment and storytelling.[16]
