Kelly Lynne D'Angelo is an American screenwriter, musical artist, cartoonist, and activist.[1]
Early Years
[edit]From an early age, D'Angelo became interested in literature. Around the age of 13, she began to dedicate herself to writing. During school and high school she began to write plays, and while at university, she began to write comic sketches. She graduated from Syracuse University.[1]
Career
[edit]In 2020, she signed a letter as a member of the Committee of Native American and Indigenous Writers of the Writers Guild of America West, openly asking Hollywood to encourage the representation of indigenous people in cinema and in television series and programs.[2]
In 2022, she was involved in a controversy related to the American comic book industry, after she denounced as racist the introduction by writer Jason Aaron of a character called Matoaka in the pages of King Conan n°3, inspired by the historical figure of Pocahontas. In the story, Matoaka replicates stereotypes associated with indigenous people, wears an outfit that shows most of his body and maintains a relationship with a white man, who can be understood as making a comparison with the story of Pocahontas. Finally, the complaints of D'Angelo and other social media users led Aaron to publish a statement apologizing and donate the money obtained by writing that number.[3]
On August 19, 2024, the American publisher Marvel Comics announced the publication of the first comic written by D'Angelo. The comic, entitled Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds, stars the superheroine amohawk Kahhori, which was originally introduced in the Disney+ web series What If...?.[4] The comic was published on November 6, 2024, in celebration of the National Month of American Indigenous Heritage.[5] The title was also collaborated on by indigenous creators Ryan Littles, Arihhonni David, David Cutler and Jim Terry, as well as a cover by Afua Richardson.[6]
As a musical artist, she has served as co-creator of the musical Starry, centered on brothers Theo and Vincent Van Gogh.[7]
