Liscooley (Irish: Lios Cúile) is a small hamlet and townland as apart of Killygordon, in the Finn Valley in east County Donegal. Located on the N15, between Stranorlar and Castlefin.[1] It runs through the River Finn and has townlands & electoral divisions in both Castlefin and Killygordon. Its Civil parish is Donaghmore.[2] The Catholic parish is St.Patricks church Crossroads, Killygordon.

Donoughmore church, Located at Carrick, Castlefin, is a Presbytrian church founded in 1658. There is also a graveyard joint next to the Church. Donoughmore National school is opposite the church and is attended by around thirty pupils.[3]

Byrne's shop and peterol station Liscooly. Opening in 1918, Byrne's shop and LCC Oil Ltd. sold goods for liscooley, located at Carricknashane, Killygordon. Byrne's Shop closed in 2018, and later 'Go Liscooly' opened there, but only a peterol station was opened. Since then, the hamlet has never had a shop and Liscooley locals have went to the nearby town of Castlefin.[4]
There is one housing estate in Liscooley, the Liscooley Villas housing estate located at Carricknashane, Killygordon/Castlefin.[5]
Education
[edit]There is one school in Liscooley, Donoughmore National school, located at Carrick, Castlefin.[6]
Students will most likely attend Deele College, St. Columba's Collage or Finn Valley College for their secondary education.

Other history

Liscooly railway station was a Train station that was at the hamlet of Liscooley that joined the Strabane to Stranorlar Finn Valley railway station up until January 1960.

Holly well:
Saint Bridget's holy well, located at. Kiltown, Killygordon (near Liscooley).[14]
Historical Buildings:
J.Davis, was a group of three two-bay two-storey houses, built in 1820. Located at Low town, Liscooly. The building to the east was used as a retail outlet in the twentieth century.[15]
Berwick Hall, was a detached three-bay single-storey over raised basement house, built in 1760. Located in Low town, Liscooly. Set back from road in overgrown grounds to the south of Liscooly, and a short distance to the north of Liscooly Bridge.[16]
Hamlet Name:
Liscooley was origanly called 'High town' and 'Low town'. It was then renamed 'Liscooly' (after the townland) and then spelled 'Liscooley'.[17] The Liscooley/Liscooly name translates to "ring-fort of Cúile".
The hamlet was originally split into two areas; High town and Low town. With Low town to the east and High town to the west.[18]

Public transport
[edit]There is one bus Éireann stop in Liscooley, located at Liscooly, Kilygordon. It has multiple bus routes, including Ballybofey. [19]
