Lyoto Machida

Lyoto Carvalho Machida (Japanese: 町田龍太, Machida Ryōto, pt; born 30 May 1978) is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and karateka.[1] Nicknamed "The Dragon", he was known for his unorthodox style in MMA that mainly combined Shotokan karate and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In 2009, he won the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship when he beat Rashad Evans via knockout in the second round. In 2014, he challenged for the UFC Middleweight Championship title. In the UFC, he compiled a 16-8 record across 24 appearances, five of them in title fights, before signing with Bellator MMA in 2018. He retired from MMA in 2022 with a record of 26 wins and 12 losses.[2]
Outside his competitive fighting career, Machida has served as a league ambassador for Karate Combat (KC).[3] He is a co-founder of Machida Karate, a methodology which focuses on Shotokan karate as its foundation and has grappling and throws as part of its self-defense curriculum.[4] He is the author of Machida Karate-Do Mixed Martial Arts Techniques (2010).[5][6] He has also made appearances in the documentary Like Water (2011) the action drama film Tapped Out (2014).[7]
