Haji Muhidi (born 1 November 1963) is an Indonesian politician and Islamic preacher who currently serves as the Speaker of the West Sumatra Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) for the 2024–2029 period. A senior figure in the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Muhidi was previously a member and Deputy Speaker of the Padang City Regional House of Representatives in multiple periods between 1999 and 2024.

He represents the electoral district of East Padang and South Padang. He was among the early founders of PKS in Padang and served as the city-level party chairman during its formative years when it was still known as the Justice Party (Partai Keadilan).

Early life and education

[edit]

Muhidi was born in Mukomuko, Bengkulu. He completed his secondary education at a Muhammadiyah high school in Padang. In 1984, he enrolled in the Physics Education program at the IKIP Padang, graduating in 1990. During his college years, he was actively involved in the Student Senate and campus mosque activities.

He began his career as a physics teacher at SMA Adabiah and SMA PGRI 3 Padang, and also taught at Adzkia tutoring center founded by Irwan Prayitno. Later, he earned a master's degree in management from STIE KBP Padang.

Political career

[edit]

With the onset of the Reformasi era, Muhidi entered politics through the Justice Party (which later became PKS). He served as chairman of the PKS Padang City Branch (DPD) until 2003.

In the 1999 legislative election, he was elected as a member of the Padang City DPRD for the first time. He returned to the council in 2014 as Deputy Speaker, and served again as a regular member from 2019 to 2024.

Muhidi was elected as a member of the West Sumatra DPRD in 2024 and was subsequently appointed as its Speaker. His election marked a unique occurrence, with all DPRD leadership positions being held by representatives from Electoral District 1 (Padang).[1]
