History
[edit]Neuron was co-founded in 2019 by Niall Greenwood and James Dunthorne.[2][3][4] The company initially focused on integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into national airspace. In 2021, it participated in UK government-sponsored under the Future Flight Challenge, where it demonstrated its drone tracking system for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations.[5][6][7][8]
Subsequently, Neuron expanded into M2M infrastructure through advanced air mobility projects, including an air taxi study led by Atkins and the ATOMICUS project with Cirium.[9] In 2023, Neuron joined Outlier Ventures’ Base Camp Accelerator Programme to develop its Web3 strategy and extend its platform beyond the aviation sector.[10][11]
Products
[edit]Neuron’s products include the 4DSKY app and unmanned traffic management system, designed to visualise flight paths and monitor low-altitude airspace. The company has also developed a decentralised service network (DSN) protocol and token ($NRN) to support direct machine-to-machine communication and data exchange.[12][13]
Technology
[edit]Neutron’s technical architecture integrates blockchain, distributed computing, and artificial intelligence. It is in partnership with Hedera Hashgraph, to log high-frequency, immutable data from edge devices, providing traceability for operations such as autonomous flight.[14][15] The platform also supports decentralised physical infrastructure networks (DePIN).[16][17]
Recognition
[edit]In 2022, Avionics International highlighted Neuron’s BVLOS drone trials as a significant development.[5][8] The same year, TechRound included Neuron in its list of notable blockchain firms based in London.[1] It has received support for innovation initiatives led by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.[18] Neuron also received first place at the 12th and 14th Global Blockchain Congress startup competitions organised by the Agora Group in 2023 and 2025.[19][20]
