Olivetheboy (born October 19, 2002, as Joel Ofori Bonsu) is a Ghanaian Afrobeats and Afropop singer and songwriter. He rose to prominence in 2023 with the release of his breakout single "Goodsin", which became one of the most streamed and viral Ghanaian songs of the year. He is known for his melodic sound, lyrical storytelling, and genre-blending approach to African popular music.
Early life and education
[edit]Ofori Bonsu was born in Konongo, a town in Ghana's Ashanti Region. Raised in a musically inclined family, his parents and godfather all pursued semi-professional music careers. He attended Opoku Ware Senior High School in Kumasi and began recording music shortly after graduation. He is currently enrolled at the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Career
[edit]2023: Breakthrough with Avana and "Goodsin"
[edit]In May 2023, Olivetheboy released his debut EP, Avana, featuring the lead single "Goodsin". The song became a commercial hit, reaching over 10 million digital streams in record time for a Ghanaian debut, and was the most Shazamed song in West Africa that year.[1] "Goodsin" also held the record for the longest-trending Ghanaian song on TikTok in 2023.
Following the success of the EP, Olivetheboy was named one of the Top 5 Hottest Ghanaian Artists of the First Half of 2023 and one of Africa’s Top 3 Creatives Under 21.[citation needed]
In August 2023, he signed an international deal with Sony Music's Columbia Records through Bu Vision Entertainment.[1] He was also named an Apple Music 'Up Next' artist, joining artists like Burna Boy, Tems, and Rema.[2]
2024: Avana (Deluxe) and new releases
[edit]In March 2024, Olivetheboy released a deluxe version of Avana, featuring new tracks and collaborations with King Promise, Oxlade, and Reekado Banks. The remix of "Goodsin" featuring these artists was widely praised.
He followed up with the release of the single "Wonda Boy" in August 2024. The track, produced by Beatz Vampire, reflected his self-assured persona and continued to expand his fanbase.[3]
2025: Out of the Blue and continued success
[edit]In early 2025, Olivetheboy released his second EP, Out of the Blue, featuring eight tracks exploring love, heartbreak, and self-discovery themes. The project included high-profile collaborations with artists like Sarkodie, Qing Madi, Soundz and Veola and received praise for its sonic maturity.[citation needed]
He also featured on "OMG", the second track on Mr. Drew’s 2025 EP Lova Boy Era.[citation needed]
In April 2025, Olivetheboy appeared on Apple Music's Africa Now Radio, where he discussed his latest single "Bend" featuring Sarkodie, his EP Out of the Blue, and his experiences growing up in Konongo.[4]
In May 2025, Olivetheboy surpassed 100 million career streams on Audiomack, becoming one of Ghana’s most streamed young artists.[5]
Musical style and influences
[edit]Olivetheboy blends Afrobeats, Afropop, soul, and R&B in his music. His vocal range, emotive delivery, and catchy songwriting have drawn comparisons to artists like Wizkid and Fireboy DML. He cites his upbringing in Konongo and his family's musical background as key influences, just like Black Sherif.[citation needed]
