On 31 May 2025, Ukrainian military forces executed a mass attack on multiple Russian air bases. Hundreds of FPV drones were used in the attacks, dispatched from cargo containers on large transport trucks. The drones had been hidden in false bottoms of the cargo containers. Multiple aircraft and facilities were hit, including multiple Tu-95 heavy bombers at Olenya airbase in Murmansk Oblast.[1][2]
The attacks were planned and executed by the Ukrainian intelligence service, launching from trucks that had been covertly placed near four Russian air bases thousands of kilometers from Ukraine, including in Siberia. Approximately 40 Russian military aircraft, including strategic bombers, were hit in the attack, according to Ukrainian military sources. The Russian Ministry of Defense noted only attacks on air bases in five different parts of Russia but claimed that, in three of the regions, the attacks were repelled.[3]
The Trump administration did not greenlight nor have previous knowledge of the attacks, as confirmed by both Ukrainian and U.S. sources.[3]
