Os Turcos

The sweets Turcos are a popular type of sweet made with wheat flour, sugar, eggs and butter, without coloring, originating from Albergaria-a-Velha, Portugal. The name "Os Turcos" represents some varieties such as Rosquilhas, Raivas, Bolos de Gema, Cavacas, Suspiros, Queijadas and Folar; and comes from a centuries-old specialty of the municipality, made by Margarida Ferreira Coutinho who continued the tradition.[1][2]
History
[edit]The "Turcos" family confectionery business is now in its fourth generation, and the recipe for these biscuits has been in Margarida Ferreira Coutinho's family since the end of the 19th century, when her grandmother, also Margarida, received the recipe from a lady from Aveiro, who had been her employer when she was single.[2]
The namesake of the sweets was Margarida Coutinho's father, whose family nickname was “the Turk”, who finally gave a name to the traditional sweets of Albergaria-a-Velha.[2]
