Education and ministry

[edit]

Dr. Peter A. Lillback is an American theologian and church historian who serves as the President and Professor of Historical Theology and Church History at Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside, Pennsylvania. He has held the presidency since 2005, becoming the fourth president in the seminary's history.[1]

Lillback earned his Bachelor of Arts from Cedarville College in 1974, his Master of Theology (Th.M.) from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1978, and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from Westminster Theological Seminary in 1985.[1]

Ordained in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC), Lillback currently holds his ministerial credentials as a teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA).[1]

In addition to his roles at Westminster, Lillback is the founder and president emeritus of the Providence Forum, an organization dedicated to promoting the Judeo-Christian foundations of American liberty. He also serves as the senior editor of Unio cum Christo: An International Journal of Reformed Theology and Life.[1]

Lillback is the author of several works, most notably George Washington's Sacred Fire (2006), a comprehensive study of the first American president’s religious convictions. In this work, Lillback argues against the notion that Washington was a deist, presenting evidence of Washington's Christian faith through extensive primary-source research.[4]

Throughout his career, Lillback has contributed to discussions on the relationship between faith and public life, the Protestant heritage of the American founding, and the enduring relevance of Reformed theology.
