Background and History
Rundu Chiefs Recreational club was established on 25 June 1976 at Rundu a town in the Republic of Namibia. The club was established with the aim of uniting community members in recreational activities such as sport, e.g. soccer and netball. One of the most important aims was to encourage all Rundu Chiefs members, supporters and players to take education as the only tool to a better life. Since its establishment, the club was only involved in netball and soccer. Through the two sport codes the club took part in different league games, tournaments and friendly games both in Kavango region and outside the region. The club is currently affiliated to the Namibia Football Association (soccer) which is the administrator of football in the country. One of the significant achievements in the 1980`s was when the soccer team (first team) reached the semifinal of a tournament held in Walvisbay in which top teams in Namibia participated. In the late 80`s the club introduced three soccer teams, namely Chiefs C (Development Team), Chiefs B (Second team) and Rundu Chiefs (First team). The three teams won different competitions e.g. Mobil soccer and netball tournament, Kavango Football Association knockout completion cup, WP motors floating trophy (soccer & netball), Kavango Football Association league trophy and Windhoek Export cup. In the 1990`s, Rundu Chiefs continued to perform and became the first club in the region to win the independence cup in 1990, when Namibia became independent. The most significant achievement in the 1990`s and 2000 is when the first team reached the quarter finals of the Namibia Football Association cup (NFA cup) in three different seasons. The club performed well in different league seasons and managed to reach the following positions; 1996/1997 soccer season (First Division, 2nd), 1997/1998 (First Division, 1st), 1998/1999 (First Division, 1st), 1999/2000 (2nd), 2000/2001 (First Division, 2nd), 2001/2002 (First Division, 2nd), 2002/2003 (First Division, 2nd), 2003/2004 (First Division, 1st), 2004/2005 (First Division, 2nd), 2005/2006 (Second Division, 1st), 2006/2007 (First Division 1st), 2007/2008 (First Division 2nd), 2008/2009 First Division (3rd), 2009/2010 (First Division 3rd), 2010/2011 (First Division 4th), 2011/2012 (1st and promoted to the elite league), 2017/2018 (15th and relegated to first division), 2023/2024 (5th) and 2024/2025 (1st and promoted to Premier League) . The first team was relegated to the second division during the 2004/2005 soccer season after the Namibia Football Association restructured the first division but managed to be promoted back to the first division during the 2006/2007 season. On April 2011 the first team won the Northern Stream First division and was promoted to the elite league (premier league) for the first time since the club`s inception. The club made history during the 2012/2013 soccer season by becoming the first team from Kavango region to survive relegation from the premier league in its maiden season by ending at 8th position. The first team also to reach the semifinal of the BIDVEST Namibia cup during the 2012/2013 season. Currently the club has three development teams with ages ranging from 12 – 16 years. The club is one of the oldest and biggest club in the Kavango East Region of Namibia. It is one of the few clubs which has its own club house. The club colour is gold and black. The first soccer team will play in the Namibia Premier League the coming soccer season (2025/2026).
