Syed Amin Tabish (born March 30, 1957) is an Indian medical scientist,[1][2][3][4] physician, and author.[5][6][7] He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London),[8] the American College of Physicians,[9] and the New York Academy of Science. He also served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bristol.Tabish has been involved in university planning, medical education, healthcare research, and administration. He is known for his contributions to academic writing and has been recognized for his work in healthcare and higher education.

Early life and education

Born in Pattan in the north-western district of Jammu and Kashmir in Baramulla, India, on March 30, 1957, he currently lives in Sanat Nagar Srinagar Kashmir.

Career

Tabish has led the design and implementation of programs at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar and Qassim University in Saudi Arabia. These programs covered scientific research, recent advances and future trends in medical sciences, evidence-based medicine, total quality management, advanced techniques in specialized patient care, emerging perspectives in healthcare, traumatic brain injury, lifestyle diseases, and emerging infectious diseases. His expertise includes medical education, problem-based learning (PBL), and quality improvement in higher academic institutions.[11]

Tabish represented India at the World Health Forum in Dallas, Texas from February 22–27, 1998. This event, organized by The Health Industry Council and the International Hospital Federation, focused on Emerging Infectious Diseases.[12][13][14]

S. Amin Tabish is a poet who writes in English, Urdu, and Kashmiri. Four music CDs based on his poems – Doad te Dugg, Ake Omri Hound Souruye Safar, Sakoon Diluk, and Mioth Zaher – containing over 70 songs have been released.[15] The lyrics have been composed and sung by singers and artists from Jammu and Kashmir.[16][17]

Social sciences and literature

Tabish has written over 300 articles in English, Urdu, and Kashmiri over four decades. His first book Hussaini Karvanuk Safar (History of Karbala) was subsequently included in the Curricula of Masters in Kashmiri language.

At 24, Tabish served as Secretary-General of the Kashmir Cultural Organization from 1982 to 1987 and was the Editor of Koshur Akhbar (the first weekly Kashmiri-language newspaper in India).[18]

Healthcare

Tabish worked as Head of Accident & Emergency Services at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar from 1997 to 2010 and held the position of Chairman from 2010 to 2012. He established a 100-bed emergency department with a unique "level system", the first of its kind. He also established a disaster management program with a separate disaster management ward at SKIMS, Srinagar to treat mass casualties in one place to save lives and limbs.

As medical superintendent and head of hospital administration, he introduced facilities like total quality management, hospital infection control, and stoma care.[18]

From 2000 to 2005, Tabish introduced several essential training programs for doctors and nurses at SKIMS, Srinagar, including basic life support, advanced life support, and advanced cardiac life support to strengthen emergency and critical care services.[1][2][18]

Medical education and scientific research

Tabish organized conferences and seminars for health professionals (National, International, Regional, and State level) at SKIMS, AIIMS New Delhi, and Saudi Arabia. He delivered lectures on health issues and medical education in the United Kingdom, the Middle East, India and the USA. He chaired several scientific sessions at various international conferences. His scientific research has focused on traumatic brain injury, lifestyle diseases, emerging infectious diseases, pandemics and epidemics, health policy and planning, and recent trends in medical education.[18]

Out of over 500 publications, Dr. Tabish's highly influential scientific research includes: "Is Diabetes Becoming the Biggest Epidemic of the Twenty-first Century?" (over 600 citations),[19] "Complementary and Alternative Healthcare: Is it Evidence-based?" (400 citations),[20] "Assessment methods in medical education" (200 citations),[21] "Lifestyle Diseases: Consequences, Characteristics, Causes and Control" (150 citations),[22] "Covid-19 Pandemic: Emerging Perspectives and Future Trends" (130 citations),[23] "The profile of head injuries and traumatic brain injury deaths in Kashmir" (120 citations).[24] Over 1.2 million research scholars have consulted his scientific research publications, with 3000 citations.

Academics

Tabish served as a Medical Council of India Inspector/Assessor from 2010 to 2020. He has been a Selection Expert for the Faculty at AIIMS, SGPGI Lucknow, and Qassim University.

He has also been a Visiting Professor at premier Saudi Arabian Universities and served as an External Examiner for AIIMS New Delhi, Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad, and the National Board of Examinations (India).[18]

Tabish contributed chapters to the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education's syllabus for 7th, 8th, 9th & 10th classes.[25][26]

Prof. Tabish introduced M. Sc. Nursing at the Nursing College of SKIMS and simultaneously facilitated PhD in nursing of a dozen candidates. Dr. Tabish played a key role in establishing the J&K Nursing Council.

Dr. Tabish also played a key role in establishing the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at SKIMS during 2004-2005.[27]

Accomplishments

Tabish became a fellow at the International Medical Sciences Academy in India in 1998, followed by fellowships at the National Academy of Medical Sciences in New Delhi in 2003 and the American College of Physicians (USA) in 2006. He also received fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians in London (2002), and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (2004). Tabish is the Founder Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Health Sciences, Qassim University, Saudi Arabia: January 2007–December 2009.[28][2]

Sahitya Akademi New Delhi honoured Dr. Syed Amin Tabish by inviting him for a daylong function held at MET Srinagar on 19 November 2024, as a writer, poet, author and researcher. His book Sormali Shaam (Dusky Evening) - Collection of Poems, was released on the occasion.[50]

Dr. Tabish was honoured by the Fakhrudin Ali Ahmad Memorial Committee & Mahasagar Shiksha Samiti Lucknow UP, for his contribution to Science and Literature.[51]
