Sophie Bathsheba Thatcher (born (2000-10-18)October 18, 2000) is an American actress and musician. After beginning as a child actress appearing in stage plays and minor television roles, she made her feature film debut in Prospect (2018). Thatcher had her breakthrough role in the series Yellowjackets (2021–present). She has since appeared in The Book of Boba Fett (2022), The Boogeyman (2023), Heretic (2024), and Companion (2025). As a musical artist, Thatcher released her debut EP, Pivot & Scrape, in 2024.

Early life

[edit]

Thatcher was born on October 18, 2000 in Chicago, Illinois.[2][3] She spent her early childhood in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, though her family moved to Lake Forest, Illinois later.[4] She was raised in Evanston, Illinois, where she attended Evanston Township High School.[5][6][7] While she was raised in a Mormon household, she has since left the church. When speaking about the church, Thatcher has said:

"It was hard growing up Mormon, [...] I don’t think it’s evil, I just don’t think it’s right for me. But as a kid it just made me so angry. Working was a good way to get out of going to church."[7]

She has a brother, an older sister and an identical twin sister named Ellie.[7][8][9] She has described her family as musical, having sung in a church choir while her mother played piano.[10] She grew up singing and started acting when she was four years old. She went to a performing arts school for musical theatre (The Chicago Academy for the Arts) and her on-camera experience led her to pursue acting more than singing.[11]

Career

[edit]

Acting

[edit]

Thatcher began her acting career at the age of 11 in a 2012 production of The Secret Garden for Music Theater Works. She went on to portray Anne Frank in a 2015 production of The Diary of Anne Frank at the Writers Theatre.[3] Her first on-screen appearance was in the short film Growing Strong (2015).[12] Later, she guested on the police procedural series Chicago P.D. (2016), an installment in the Chicago franchise. That same year, she made another guest appearance in Fox's supernatural horror television series The Exorcist, where she played a younger version of Regan MacNeil.[13]

In 2018, Thatcher made her feature film debut in the science fiction film Prospect, co-starring Pedro Pascal.[14] She plays a teenage girl who travels with her father, played by Jay Duplass, to an alien moon to mine gems in the moon's poisonous forest. Her performance was praised, with Variety describing her as "a fresh face who tricks us into assuming she's just a callow teen, when in fact, she proves to be the film's toughest character."[15] Later that year, Thatcher had a recurring role in the third season of the medical drama series Chicago Med, another entry in the Chicago franchise.[16]

The following year, she appeared in Noble Jones' directorial debut The Tomorrow Man. During this time, Thatcher landed the role of Natalie in Yellowjackets. Regarding the process, creator Bart Nickerson said the casting department was searching for "someone who was really free-spirited and unique who could play both a sort of wildness and a vulnerability." Though most of the auditions were held in-person, Thatcher submitted a self-recorded audition tape and was cast as Natalie before Juliette Lewis, who portrays the character's adult counterpart.[17] The pilot episode was greenlit in September and shot in Los Angeles in November 2019.[18]

Thatcher in 2023

In 2020, Thatcher starred in When the Streetlights Go On, a short-form streaming series directed by Rebecca Thomas. The series debuted on Quibi on April 6.[19] In November 2020, Thatcher was rumored to be joining the Star Wars franchise but it was unknown in which series she would appear.[20] In December 2020, Showtime gave Yellowjackets a series order;[21] it premiered in November 2021 to rave reviews and became the second-most streamed series in Showtime's history behind Dexter: New Blood.[22]

Following months of speculation, Thatcher was confirmed to be appearing in The Book of Boba Fett (2022) as Drash, the leader of a group of cyborgs who work for Boba Fett.[23] That same year, she starred in the horror short film Blink, where she played a paralyzed woman who could only communicate through her eyes. Blink premiered at SXSW in March 2022, and was made available on YouTube soon thereafter.[24] Also in March, she appeared in the music video for rock band Pavement's 1999 single "Harness Your Hopes."[25] Later that year, Thatcher was listed as an executive producer on the film Provo, which was directed by her older sister Emma. She next appeared alongside Chris Messina and David Dastmalchian in the horror film The Boogeyman, based on the Stephen King short story of the same name and released in theaters on June 2, 2023.[26][27]

An ex-Mormon herself, Thatcher played a Mormon missionary in the horror film Heretic (2024). In 2025, she starred alongside Jack Quaid in the science fiction dark comedy thriller film Companion (2025).[28] In February 2025, it was announced that Thatcher was in talks to star opposite Mark Eydelshteyn in the second season of Amazon Prime Video's spy series Mr. & Mrs. Smith.[29] In April 2025, Thatcher was announced to be starring in Nicolas Winding Refn's upcoming feature film Her Private Hell, alongside Charles Melton, Kristine Froseth and Havana Rose Liu.[30][31]

Music

[edit]

Thatcher is an experimental pop artist.[32][33] After releasing two singles, she released her debut EP, entitled Pivot & Scrape, on October 11, 2024.[34] On November 8 of that year, she also released a cover of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" for the film Heretic.[35][33]

Personal life

[edit]

Thatcher previously lived in the Sherman Oaks and Silver Lake neighborhoods of Los Angeles. As of 2025, she lives in the Nichols Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles with her boyfriend Austin Feinstein, musician and member of the band Slow Hollows.[36][37]
