2025 Kolkata gang rape was a reported gang rape incident that took place on 25 June 2025 inside the premises of South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. A 24-year-old first-year law student alleged that she was sexually assaulted by multiple individuals, including a former student leader and two current students of the college.[1][2][3][4][5]

Incident

According to the complaint, the student was lured to the college on the pretext of discussing student union matters.[1] Once there, she was allegedly confined in the security guard's room and raped by Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old former student and ex-president of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit, while two other students, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, stood guard outside.[1] The accused allegedly filmed the act and threatened to circulate the footage and harm her family.[6]

Investigation

All three accused were arrested on 27 June 2025 and remanded in police custody until 1 July.[7] A fourth accused, Pinaki Banerjee, a 55-year-old college security guard, was arrested the following day for dereliction of duty and allegedly facilitating the crime.[8] Medical examination confirmed sexual assault, with evidence including bite and scratch marks.[6]

Reactions

The incident drew significant public outrage and political criticism. Security measures and political interference in colleges were widely debated following the case.[1]
