F1 is a 2025 American sports drama film, directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, from a story by the two. It stars Brad Pitt as a race-car driver who returns to Formula One after 30 years to save an underdog team from collapse. It was made with the collaboration of the FIA, F1's governing body, and features many real-life F1 drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, who was a producer on the film. F1 also stars Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem.

F1 premiered on June 16, 2025, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and was theatrically released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on June 27. It has received positive reviews from critics and grossed $36.7 million at the worldwide box office, on a $200 million production budget.

Plot

Aging American race-car driver Sonny Hayes refuses to retire, living out of his van and never staying in one place for long. Although he raced in Formula One for Team Lotus in the 1990s, severe injuries from a crash at the 1993 Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez ended his Formula One career.[b] He became a gambling addict and now bounces from competition to competition. After he wins the 24 Hours of Daytona, his Lotus teammate Ruben Cervantes, who owns the APXGP F1 team, offers him a test drive, as APX's second driver is out for the season. Cervantes discloses that his investors will fire him unless APX wins a race that year. With nine races left, Cervantes chooses Hayes to save his job. Hayes reluctantly agrees, as APX is stuck at the bottom of the standings.

At the test drive at Silverstone, Hayes meets team principal Kaspar Smolinski, technical director Kate McKenna, and talented rookie driver Joshua Pearce. Pearce is cocky, but he worries that if Cervantes is fired, he will be fired too. He believes that to survive, he must impress the grid by crushing any teammate Cervantes hires for him. Hayes has trouble adjusting to modern F1 machinery, but begins figuring out the car. He pushes too hard and crashes, but Smolinski recognizes his skill and lets him drive full-time.

Hayes' first race goes badly, as slow pit stops drop the APX drivers to last place after a promising start. Hayes ignores a team order to let Pearce by, and the teammates crash into each other. Hayes mends his relationship with Pearce by gaming F1 rules. By intentionally crashing into other drivers to force safety car periods, he helps Pearce catch up to faster cars and score the first point for the team. Pearce adopts some of Hayes' old-school training methods and Hayes emulates Pearce's work in the racing simulator.

APX becomes a solid midfield team after Hayes persuades McKenna to overhaul the car so that it can race more closely in the corners. The team gets its first chance at a win during a rainstorm at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Hayes encourages Pearce to stay out on slick tires, which risks aquaplaning but vaults Pearce to second place. However, Pearce impatiently ignores Hayes' advice to wait for a safe straight before overtaking Max Verstappen. Pearce crashes at the Parabolica and misses the next several races due to injury, during which Hayes progressively improves his finishes on the leaderboard in Pearce's absence. Pearce resolves to crush Hayes on the track when he returns. In his comeback race, Pearce's aggressive driving eliminates Hayes, infuriating him.

With two races left, McKenna arranges a poker game where the winner decides who gets favorable treatment at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Pearce wins, but after he leaves, Hayes reveals that he let Pearce win. Impressed, McKenna takes Hayes to her room, and they spend the night together. However, they are interrupted by an announcement that according to a whistleblower, McKenna illegally designed her upgrades with outside help. McKenna denies wrongdoing, but the FIA regulations force her to remove the upgrades. A frustrated Hayes gets road rage during the race and crashes. While Hayes recovers in the hospital, Cervantes learns that Hayes' 1990s injuries have permanently impaired his ability to drive, and fires him for his own safety. APX board member Peter Banning reveals to Hayes that he faked the whistleblower complaint so that he could fire Cervantes for underperformance and sell the team. He offers to make Hayes team principal if the sale goes through.

Before the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Pearce admits that Hayes did not cause his crash in Italy, and resolves to be more responsible on track. Hayes declines Banning's offer and talks Cervantes into giving him one last race. The FIA exonerates McKenna and restores her upgrades. During the race, a lucky red flag after Hayes collides with George Russell, and good teamwork against Charles Leclerc, leave Pearce and Hayes in third and forth. Hayes sacrifices his chance at a win by forcing race leader Lewis Hamilton to block him instead of Pearce. However, Hamilton and Pearce crash, giving Hayes the win and saving Cervantes' job and the APX team. Following the race, Hayes and McKenna begin a relationship. Toto Wolff offers Pearce a seat, but Pearce declines, stating that he's happy where he is. Hayes retires from Formula One, but stays in the racing world, competing in the Baja 1000.

Production

On December 3, 2021, a bidding war commenced for an untitled film starring Brad Pitt, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Joseph Kosinski, and screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who previously worked on Top Gun: Maverick, on board in their respective roles. Sources said F1 driver Lewis Hamilton was also involved in the film. Studios involved in the bidding were Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, and Walt Disney Pictures, and streamers Netflix, Apple, and Amazon.[8] Pitt was paid $30 million for his involvement.[9]

In November 2022, Claudio Miranda announced he would be the film's cinematographer.[10] In April 2023, Damson Idris was hired after a lengthy casting process, which included a shortlist of actors driving the car in January 2023.[11] Kerry Condon and Tobias Menzies would join the cast in the following months.[12][13] Sarah Niles and Simone Ashley also joined the cast.[14][6] However, in June 2025, Kosinski revealed that Ashley's role had been cut from the film.[7]

Filming

Prior to filming, Pitt and Idris tested Formula Three and Formula Two cars at the Circuit Paul Ricard in France.[15][16] In July 2023, principal photography began at the Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom, including filming during the 2023 British Grand Prix weekend on July 8–9.[17] Pitt drove a modified Formula 2 car, which had the engine removed and replaced with an electric motor, along with an added Formula One aero-package during the race weekend, but not in an official F1 session.[18][19][20] The car was made in collaboration with the Mercedes-AMG F1 team and Carlin Motorsport.[15][21]

Apple designed a custom onboard camera for the car based on iPhone and powered by its A-series system on a chip,[22] while Sony CineAlta designed a smaller version of its Venice Extension System, so that upto 4 cameras could be set up onto the cars, without affecting their weight. Panavision also designed a special remote head rig that allowed the cameras on the cars to create panning movements.

Filming also took place at the Hungaroring, Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Monza Circuit, Circuit Zandvoort, Suzuka International Racing Course, Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Las Vegas Strip Circuit, Yas Marina Circuit[15] and Brands Hatch.[23] At the 2024 24 Hours of Daytona, the #120 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R competed with a livery of the fictional "Chip Hart Racing" team from the film, with multiple replicas of it and the #96 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 used for filming. A camera-mounted Lola B2K/10 was used as a filming car for high speed shots.[24]

Speaking with former F1 driver and Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle at the 2023 British Grand Prix, Pitt confirmed Javier Bardem would star.[25] Later that month, ESPN reported that the film was titled Apex, but it later retracted this statement.[26]

The SAG-AFTRA strike in late 2023 resulted in the lead actors not being involved in filming and a reduced crew consisting of only Equity actors sent to races from the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix onwards.[27] Filming was then forced to continue through the 2024 season to make up for the lost races.[28]

On July 5, 2024, the title F1 was announced. A teaser trailer premiered before the 2024 British Grand Prix.[29] Kruger received sole credit for the film's screenplay, along with story credit with Kosinski. Jez Butterworth, Kara Smith, Aaron Sorkin, and Christopher Storer earned off-screen "Additional Literary Material" credit.[30]

In May 2024, Puck's Matthew Belloni reported the film's budget to be $300 million.[31] Bruckheimer and Kosinski disputed the claim; the former cited rebates and sponsorships as lowering the budget, and the latter said: "I've never had an experience where they were off by this much on a film. I'm not sure where that number came from."[15] In 2025, ahead of the film's theatrical release, some industry sources reported the film's budget to be $200 million, though others still claimed the $300 million figure.[2][32][3]

Music

During the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, Hans Zimmer announced he will be composing the original score of the film, making his second collaboration with Kosinski after Top Gun: Maverick (2022). This will be the second Formula One-related film Zimmer will have scored after scoring the Ron Howard-directed film Rush (2013).[33]

American rappers Don Toliver and Doja Cat released the song "Lose My Mind" and its accompanying music video on April 30 as part of the movie's soundtrack, F1 the Album.[34] Australian and South Korean singer Rosé released the song "Messy" and its accompanying music video as the soundtrack's second single on May 8th 2025.[35]

The third official single was released on May 23rd, "Baja California" by Puerto Rican rapper Myke Towers.[36] On May 30, 2025, "Just Keep Watching" by Tate McRae was released as the fourth single.[37]

Several promotional singles were released on different dates. These include "No Room for a Saint" by Dom Dolla, Chris Stapleton's "Bad as I Used to Be", Tiësto and Sexyy Red's "OMG!", "Underdog" by Roddy Ricch.

On June 20, 2025, "Drive" by Ed Sheeran was released as a single.[38]

Post-production

Ryan Tudhope is the VFX supervisor,[39] and Framestore provided post-production services on the film, citing involvement from their studios in both London and Mumbai.[40]

Marketing

Two trailers were released: the first on July 7, 2024, before the 2024 British Grand Prix,[41] a TV spot was released on February 9, 2025, during Super Bowl LIX,[42] and a second official trailer was released on March 13, 2025, shortly prior to the commencement of the Australian Grand Prix.[43][44] On June 11, 2025, Apple released a "haptic trailer" for the film. When played on a supported iPhone, the Taptic Engine pulses and vibrates along with the action on-screen.[45]

Sponsorships from various brands featured in the movie brought in at least $40 million, according to Forbes estimates.[46] Many of the brands were featured on the APXGP cars and clothing as team sponsors, such as Expensify, GEICO, SharkNinja and EA Sports.[46] Other sponsors that featured on the cars such as IWC Schaffhausen released watches themed on APXGP's black and gold colors, Tommy Hilfiger launched a line of clothing, and Mercedes-AMG revealed a limited APXGP-edition Mercedes-AMG GT 63. The F1 25 game by EA Sports featured the APXGP livery as it appears in the film alongside scenarios that players can undertake.[47]

In June 2025, Heineken 0.0 released a commercial for their product featuring Pitt and Idris as F1 drivers.[48][49]

Apple's 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote began with Craig Federighi driving the APXGP car on the roof of Apple Park.[50]

At the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans, the #90 Manthey Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R ran a livery similar to the one used for filming at the 2024 24 Hours of Daytona.[51] At the 2025 Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen the following weekend, the same #120 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R used for filming in 2024 ran the race with the livery from the film.[52] The drivers and crew were also given a private screening.[52]

On June 20, 2025, Hot Wheels announced the release of a 1:64 scale die-cast model of the #7 APXGP car driven by Brad Pitt's character in the movie.[53]

In certain Latin American countries, McDonald's launched a special combo in partnership with F1 where customers have the option to pay extra to get a 1:43 scale APXGP or McDonald's liveried model car.[54] Some McDonald's outlets in São Paulo also had full-size F1 cars on display.[54]

Release

In June 2022, Apple acquired distribution rights in a package deal worth $130–140 million before above-the-line compensation.[55]

In June 2024, Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the theatrical, home entertainment and digital purchase distribution rights from Apple; Apple retains SVOD rights and the film will become available on Apple TV+ at a later date.[56] The film had an early IMAX screening on June 23, 2025.[57] The film was released in the IMAX format internationally on June 25, 2025, and was released domestically on June 27, 2025.[58]

A private screening was held in Monaco during the Cannes Film Festival for the drivers of the 2025 season.[59]

The movie had its world premiere on June 16, 2025 at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City, with the cast and F1 drivers in attendance.[60] The European premiere was held on June 23 at Empire Leicester Square in London.[61]

F1 chartered a Qatar Airways flight for the drivers and team principals from Montreal to New York to attend the premiere after the Canadian Grand Prix.[62]

Reception

Box office

In the United States and Canada, F1 was released alongside M3GAN 2.0, and is projected to gross anywhere from $35 million to as much as $60 million in its opening weekend, with most industry estimates around $40 million.[63][64] The film made $10 million in previews, including $7 million from Thursday showings.[3]

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 83% of 233 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.10/10. The website's consensus reads: "Driven by Brad Pitt's laidback magnetism and sporting a souped-up engine courtesy of Joseph Kosinski's kinetic direction, F1 the Movie brings vintage cool across the finish line."[65] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 68 out of 100, based on 48 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[66]

BBC's Nicholas Barber gave the film two stars out of five and wrote: "Formula One enthusiasts may disagree, and they may be delighted that their beloved motorsport has been put on the big screen in such a laudatory fashion. Everyone else: this is not where you want to be."[67]
