Control of Ansongo
[edit]As I can't put everything into an edit description I am going to use this to argue for 1: Ansongo the city was never captured by ISIS and 2: To change the line in the article to emphasize the rural areas of the cercle by adding a further source. 3: Add another line about the UN leaving in 2023.
Let's start with the current arcticle. It currently says this: "In October 2022, Ansongo was captured by the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara." with source from October this: https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/islamist-militants-mali-kill-hundreds-displace-thousands-eastern-advance-2022-10-14/ with relevant passage this: "This month, Islamist militants took over the rural Ansongo district, near the border with Niger, a local official and pro-government militia said." Now I argue that this refered to just the rural areas with the following sources: https://www.rfi.fr/fr/afrique/20221107-mali-face-%C3%A0-l-ins%C3%A9curit%C3%A9-la-soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9-civile-du-cercle-d-ansongo-appelle-%C3%A0-la-d%C3%A9sob%C3%A9issance-civile This source from November makes it clear that Ansongo and surroundings still exit and can do civil disobedience action. It also references the security situation of the cercle which is in line with an interpretation of the original article just meaning the rural surroundings. This source: https://news.un.org/fr/story/2022/10/1128767 talks mainly about Menaka and troubles with humanitarian access. It mentions which areas are not accessible and which are troubled. Relevant is here that it names the "Ansongo-Ménaka" road as dangerous which in my opinion it wouldn't if Ansongo wasn't government controlled because then it would list it among the other unaccessible localities or not at all because it would be no point you could travel to.
Additionaly there is this: https://news.un.org/fr/story/2023/11/1140807 from November 2023. Talking about UN giving it's base over to FAMa. No mention of any ISIS takeover ever. The article even talks about the security situation but only mentions a decrease of incidents. This article too talks about this: https://www.rfi.fr/fr/afrique/20231120-mali-la-minusma-a-quitt%C3%A9-le-camp-d-ansongo It also talks about its history but also mentions no ISIS takeover despite talking about the local control history.
With this I will do the changes I mentioned above using this source: https://www.rfi.fr/fr/afrique/20221107-mali-face-%C3%A0-l-ins%C3%A9curit%C3%A9-la-soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9-civile-du-cercle-d-ansongo-appelle-%C3%A0-la-d%C3%A9sob%C3%A9issance-civile to make it clearer that the rural areas are meant.
