When we use terminal to connect with UNIX/LINUX multi-user system, we can use terminal server (just like DEC system) or multi-user card (just like AT&T system)to handle data in serial communication system. Generally we need to use IOP(I/O processor) for such task. So the data between serial port communication and main CPU is memory access. If we did not have IOP to handle serial port communication, then main CPU need to handle such task. The performance is very poor for such condition. Because I/O access is slow operation for main CPU. In RAYON Technology we have IOP3927 card to handle serial port communication task. In one IOP3927 card we can handle upto 64 serial port communication. The data between serial port and IOP3927 card is handled by 133MHz MIPS local processor and 16MByte local buffer. The data between IOP3927 card and main CPU is handled by memory access in PCI or PCI-X bus.
