In late February, an editor at Le Point published an article in the magazine accusing editors at Wikipedia of waging a months-long disinformation campaign in the French Wikipedia article about the magazine and alluded to legal action underway, and accused Wikipedia editors of conspiracy theories in their reaction to having their content challenged and editor identities investigated and possibly revealed in future articles in the magazine unless certain actions were undertaken.

The public portion of the affair began with the publication of the 18 February 2025 article by Erwan Seznec entitled, "Wikipédia contre « Le Point » : comment « l’encyclopédie libre » est devenue une machine à calomnier" ("Wikipedia vs. 'Le Point': how the 'free encyclopedia' became a slander machine"). It begins like this:

"Le Point is the target of a smear campaign waged by anonymous activists on Wikipedia. And when asked about their motives, the authors cry censorship and start petitions."

After having investigated one of the Wikipedida editors involved and tracked down his identity, they sent him emails at his workplace, quoting in the article in Le Point their own e-mail threatening to dox him in the pages of the magazine, stating the following:

"For weeks, our lawyers have been considering what to do about the coordinated harassment of Le Point. [...] We are going to do an article on you, on our site, giving your identity, your position, and asking for an official reaction from [name of your last known employer]."

This immediately blew up in the French press, with reporting and analysis of the situation on all sides. The "In the Press" section of the Talk page of the French article (at fr:Discussion:Le Point) links three dozen articles in the French press about the dust-up between Le Point and French Wikipedia editors and the WMF.

In addition, the magazine kept up a drumbeat of articles criticizing Wikipedia in the magazine:

Articles publishedd in Le Point about Wikipedia in the following ddays

This mostly blew up in February, and has quieted since then. Mathglot (talk) 09:17, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Are you trying to make a point (if so, which one)? This is already addressed in the article. Hplotter (talk) 12:22, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
